Crucial M4 128Gb RAID 0 or not

I'm looking at getting another 128Gb M4 as the prices are low.

I will probably use the extra space in the long run but am not too short on space at the mo.

Would i see a noticible increase in read / write speeds running them in RAID0?

Also what are the benefits / cons of doing this?

How hard is it to set up RAID0 never done it before?

Thanks for any help.

setting up raid isnt hard at all. theres a simple walk-through for it.

people will tell you thats its dangerous because if one drive dies you lose all your data...but same goes if its a single O.o

im actually planning on doing it but i fell in love with the samsung 830. buts its for my future laptop. so once i get that its raid M4s for me

Pros: RAID0 will increase sequential performance for large files.

Mediocre: almost no improvement for access times and random performance for small files.

Cons: No TRIM for RAID arrays, must rely on garbage collection. Slightly longer boot up times to initialise RAID mode.

technically yes but if the one u use by itself fails first it doesnt really matter.
also for large files it'll finish it faster so more time to on idle. longer life? (maybe)

small files basically gets finished instantly raid or no raid.
if you play games with huge maps it'll help a lot.

thanks for your input Riou gives the OP some serious pros-cons to weigh.

Being that I have been using raid 0 for many years, I must warn you of the most important problem. Once you raid 0, you will never want anything else.
After going from 3 raptors in raid 0 the only thing faster is SSD in raid 0. redface.gif

So my advice is, stay away from raid 0 and you will never know what you are missing. thumb.gif

This is an example someone posted for a 64GB drive on what you can expect for 4k.

This is what I see with my 256GB in RAID0 (IOPS).

Seeing as your 128GB drive IS faster with 4k compared to mine, you should see better. Personally I recommend it as long as you know what you're getting yourself into which I think most would be anyway.

edit: mine was with RC3 and there was a mention it shows slower results than the previous versions. Not sure if true.

RAID 0:
There's no real benefit in RAID0 SSD for most people since it just boost sequential performance. You generally do not need to load massively large files into memory nor have another storage device fast enough to transfer from/to.

Pros:
  • 2X faster sequential reads/writes of the slowest drive (not really noticeable with SSDs).
  • 2X space of the smallest drive.

Cons:
  • No TRIM support for SSDs part of an array atm.
  • RAID 0 only improves sequential performance which is generally not that useful and it also almost doubles your failure rate. (1 drive goes the array is lost and all data is gone, you need to have a backup of all the data on the array in case of a failure)
  • Slightly slower boot time (The RAID controller needs to initialized after the BIOS does and that adds time to your boot time, usually 3-5 seconds slower)
