Got a free case. Thought I'd attempt my first mod. I'm kind of lost.

I got this old dell case, which is actually a decent looking mini tower. I thought I'd use it for an HTPC, but it's got a dell PSU and dell motherboard. It is only designed to fit those 2, as well. I was wondering if anyone could throw some ideas at me of what to do with it? I took some pictures of the interior, and of the rear.

As you can see, there is no place to put an i/o shield.

This is the actual interior of the case itself. 450

I'm kind of lost as to what to do with it, but I figured it could be a good learning experience for me. My plan is to drop in either a Llano or a Pentium based system for HTPC use. Maybe with a low powered video card like a GT430 or 6670.
In progress.

Dump the motherboard, and the PSU. Try fitting in an ITX board, but as the thing seems to have a reversed layout, you may find it's pointless.
If nothing else, you can practice your dremel technique on the case. I suspect stripping it for parts and practising making holes in it may be all you can do.

Id start by taking out those horrid dell components unless you can still use the PSU, if not some small amounts of cutting maybe a custom built bracket.
You'd also need to chop the standoffs if they are in the wrong place and jb weld some new ones on in the right place?
Also depending on the size of the rear IO you might need to cut it
I would go the llano route those things are nice for a htpc

Hey,

Drop yourself in a Llano CPU. Those will be better for an HTPC, as Video Rendering is one of AMD's pro's with their processors. Remove the front Panel, Bondo the ventilation holes, sand, and then drill out a 120MM Fan for the intake (If a 120MM can fit the case, between the Dell logo and the case badges). Throw yourself in a 400W PSU, and then get a GTS 450 1GB for a HD-TV that's 40+ Inches. Throw in 4GB's RAM in-case if you would like to do a couple things. Make exhaust ports on the side of the case, and at the rear. Use the right side of the wall of this case (As the picture is taken above) and drill yourself out two 120MM Fan ports. Try and fit in an H50 or H40 Corsair CPU Cooler in there.

Why would I need a gts450 for an htpc? The apu can handle 1080p video. Screen size doesn't matter.

I don't think I can switch out the power supply. There is almost no space between where the dvd rom and hard drive go and the power supply.

That case is a SFF case, no way he could fit 120mm fans on the front because the case isn't wide enough, might be able to fit 92 mm fans tho. Also he needs to cut out the back and reverse the mobo orientation as this looks sort of like a mini BTX board

In the op you say there is no place for an i/o sheild. Incorrect, just push hard on the dell one and it pops out. It looks like part of the case but its not.

That is just padding. It's a solid piece of metal that goes all the way up to the psu, and the psu bolts into that same piece.
