I cant even comprehend a person like OP. We are just total opposites! I can't settle for anything less than the best! (if my funds allow it thumb.gif)

2500K or 3570K is definitely worth it..IMO ..especially when OC'd
Just for kicks I stuck a 2500k in an H61 mobo..I felt it was kinda "meh"
The overclocking is where you notice the speed.

I got a 6 core 3930K to justify the purple LEDs on my XPSC Raystorm??? True Story!

And because its fast?

Maybe thats why.

Quad Cores are overkill.... you will be fine with a Sempron.

tongue.gif

ok ok .... Its not all about the cores. If you get the latest quad core CPU it will blow away a dual core not because it has 2 more cores but these current generation Sandy and Ivy have so much higher IPC performance.

Good luck playing The witcher 2 or crysis 2 at max settings 1920x1080 on a i3 and 460... you may be able to but if your any less than 50fps its ****ty. Maybe you cant tell the difference because you dont want to? If you have played at 40fps and below for a year or more you are used to it so it doesnt look ****ty. But I can bet anything if you played those same games at 60+ fps for a week and went back you would punch your peice of crap i3 in the face.

One thing nobody has mentioned yet is yes, quad cores might be a waste of money right now, unless your trying to run max graphics on the newest of new games, but when you get outside of gaming, theres plenty of reason for them. Being an IT Professional, not only does my laptop have an I-7 in it for work, but so does my desktop. When you get outside of gaming, and more into the real world computer usage, virtualization becomes something that is really commonplace anymore. Some of the servers ive used and configured for companies have had 100+gb of ram, and 2+ 6core procs in them. Now those procs are HT enabled, so their essentially 24 cores.

Keep in mind that when people buy things, its not just for gaming, Many people use computers for other stuff. Those movies you see in the theatres arent being made on I-3's I assure you.

You're asking why people want/need quad cores or higher on ocn? Get real....

A few things come to mind. high resolution ultra gaming on two cards, folding, scientific computing, video editing, 3d rendering ect.... a i3 is very weak doing all that compared to an i5 i7 or phenom quad,6core.

And now a days on new egg you can put together a i5 2500k and radeon 7800 series card and Ssd ect.... For easily under a thousand bucks.

You wont see drastic improvements in frame rates or even workloads to be honest. Given your current hardware setup that i3 is more then enough to rock what you have in your system. I guess you could say the i3 is a poor mans i7. If I was you I would take that money and start putting it away, then by the time Haswell comes out you will be one of them people that can afford a $2000 system. thumb.gif
