I have a six core and 32gb ram because I run 4-6 virtual machines for school, and a couple every now and then to test out things for work.
But if I was only gaming on this machine, I'd need far, far less. Perhaps I would have been better off with a modest gaming rig and a six core server, but I like having everything on one machine.
