They are not exactly calling it the Higgs Boson just yet, only that it seems pretty similar. 

Regardless, this is a huge discovery. 

They are 99.999% certain they discovered a new particle, I believe.

Before stuff (matter) existed with weight (mass) simply just because, but we could only explain in theory why. Enter: Higgs Boson (really really really really hard to find). Now there is an explanation to why things have mass.

About as simple an explanation i can think of.
