May pickup new Kingdom Hearts

So I'm thinking about buying the new Kingdom Hearts game when it comes out for 3DS. But the thing is, I have never played any of the games since it debuted on the PS2. Are these games like Final Fantasy where you don't need to play them in any order since they are all separate stories?

I would love some input on these games, I've heard a lot of good things but it just never really appealed to me.

No. They are all a one big story. Here is a some sort of timeline. The events of Dream Drop Distance will take place after those of Coded.

if you played 1 and 2 the other games are kinda irrelevant to the story...they add info but nothing super essential.
