Any updates on GPU folding?

Wondering if any of our members have been folding regularly with the GPU client?

I tried it as soon as it was released and had several issues and had to stop as I was trying to get this system dialed in. I tried to change my screen resolution with the GPU client and 1 CPU client running and the system crashed, when it rebooted my USB drivers were corupt and I had to do a complete re-format/re-install of Windows.

I also checked in at the Stanford forums but didn't see anything about resolving any issues saving the progress if you wanted to shut down the core, ect.....

So if you have been using the GPU client, please share your experiences.....

Hi thumper,

As you stated, the gpu client is not real stable on my computer either. The computer was built by me specifically for folding. The specs are:
ASUS A8N Sli-32 Deluxe, AMD 64 - 3500 cpu, 1Gb Crucial Billistix DDR, Seagate 250Gb Hard drive, Sony CD-ROM and most importantly and most expensive ATI X1950 XTX video card. Nothing else is on the computer, except a cleamn install of Windos XP SP2. (BTW - I used the AMD 64 3500 Venice core, because I had it already) At some point, I might buy a higher AMD cpu for this system, but not right now.

I've tried the 6.5 drivers with limited success. The 6.10 drivers off the ATI web site, "seem" to work the best. However, Stanford also changed their gpu client to version 7. They seemed to have remedied the Early Unit End and failures to report after 85% completion. I know they are actively working on getting the program straightened out and have also found that some of the compliations are extremely cpu intensive. That's all I've been able to find out so far... That is also why they are given 330 to 440 points per completed WU. Folding on my rig seems to average about 6.5s per frame. That's a little low for the X1950 compared to others, but I haven't really tried overclocking or anything else for that matter with the system. Everything is at stock speeds, until I get more stability.

BTW - Running the gpu for anything but folding will pause the work unit and when it re-starts, the completed work is gone. It starts from the beginning again. Not good for most folks. I know Stanford is working on this problem as well based on the posts from VJ on their web site.

I hope this helped, :-)

Thanks for the update 455.....seems like there is still a way to go with it before it's ready for full time use. I just didn't want my 1900XTX to sit here idle all day if they had it worked out and I hadn't seen any new updates.

would the gpu fold faster than a dual core amd?

Hi bgbop,

Right now only the X1900 series has folding programs written for them. The benchmark gpu is the X1900XT. Stanford says that eventually the X1800 series will have folding program written, but they're are putting all of their attention on the 1900 series first.

I hope this helped, :-)
