Sorry bro, be we have a capitalist economy. The government has very very limited power to set a price for any commercial product, even if that product is a necessary commodity. That includes gas, food, water and the like.

What the Government CAN do is make law about how, and what reason and in what circumstance is it legal to raise the price of a product or service (see the health reform bill:note your car insurance bi-laws)

TBH i don't really see the issue with price fixing and monopolies, It's their product, and THEIR market if they can do it, more power to them, We don't ~need~ computers and lcd screens, they are but a simple luxury.

So if AMD and Intel got together and said "look lets make the minimum price of a CPU $1000" you're good with that? Competition in the marketplace is supposed to bring innovation and cheaper prices, if companies are allowed to get away with this where does it stop? Food? Water? Your happy with the fuel prices in Australia?

I may not be happy with it, That's why i use LPG, But again this is their market, WE don't require these things to survive, You do realise you can grow your own vegetables right? and acquire your own water, It's not exactly hard though granted most of the current generation wouldn't know a thing about home cooking, Growing things, or standard survival methods, ladies and gentlemen i bring you the rain water tank.

Also Given that AMD and intel are the only ones on the market with competing X68 cpu's if they did do that eventualy they would crash and die because no-one would buy them, And companies would run out their old gear, So that alone pretty much solves the problem.

I can't believe that you're serious... Consider the implications: Nobody needs milk so raise the price to $10 a gallon, nobody needs broccoli so raise the price to $8 a pound.

Seriously, what are you talking about?

If everyone was required or forced to procure all of their own resources society as we know it would collapse. "Make your own flu vaccine, computer hardware, farm your own vegetables and livestock etc..."

Did you know you can Grow your own broccoli? you are paying for a luxury, The ability to walk down the shop and bam it's there and ready, There are no implications, Go ahead fine the companies, but if they did pricefix without being fined, No-one would buy it, And as such prices would go back down, As one of the mods around here keeps saying over, and over, Vote with your wallet if Toshiba price fixs, Buy another brand, or better yet keep your current monitor.

Yes actualy i am, It's a lovely monitor, But i do not need it to survive, I could live without it, Or hell live without my computer as a whole, I'd be pretty bored, and have to find something new to entertain myself, But it would not kill me to be without one.

Came in to say this. It's a luxury item and you were probably happy with what you paid for it at the time. Think of all the work these companies are doing, the salaries they have to pay, and how cheap an LCD REALLY is when you think about all it does. Who are you to tell these companies not to make a buck?

Ultimately price fixing won't get out of control because market demand will still cap prices. For example, even if Intel became the only x86 manufacturer I'm willing to be their prices would still be in line with what they are now because that's what people are willing to pay for them.

I dont think you understand what price fixing is, there would be no cheaper brands as they are colluding.
