How to make my laptop faster/better?

Thread Starter
I purchased an HP G62-400 laptop about a year ago. It isn't meant to be a gaming laptop or anything, just a standard laptop that lets me browse fast and does basic normal user stuff. It's an i3 machine and it does have an AMD gpu inside, but it isn't meant to play games well. It can barely run browser games at low detail (Runescape). Memory is Crucial 4GB..idk the speed. The hard drive is a 5400rpm Seagate, which is decent but not my favorite brand.

Recently, it's been getting extremely slow boot times and it just takes FOREVER to do anything. I thought it may be Windows 7, so I installed Ubuntu. It's a bit better but is still slow at things. For example, Chome takes like 5-10 seconds to open lol. I kinda want to go back to Windows 7, because I want my devices to be compatible and work properly/etc.

What would be the best way to make my laptop faster and better? I know I can probably upgrade ram and hard drive, but i feel like it will not have any effect at all. Should I stick to Ubuntu or try other things? Help biggrin.gif

Get an SSD in there. Hard drives in laptops are just a bad idea as they get bashed about too much. + its will be much faster maybe you could install a HHD in the optical drive slot as secondary (larger) storage.

If you want something light go for Arch or something along those lines. Ubuntu has gone down the toilet since after 11.04

I was thinking of buying a 256GB SSD. Idk if it would be enough or not. I really don't have much on the laptop anyways. It isn't my main computer.

yeah definitely slap an SSD in there, it's honestly going to be the best bang for your buck.
and possibly look into 8gb of ram, if your mobo supports it.

I have a 256 in the mac I ordered because that was the smallest I could get, I would have been able to get away with a 128. It depends what you do really.

What laptop is it? edit its in op.

Yeah I definitely say get an SSD, my laptop isn't really noticeably slower than my desktop for web browsing and basic stuff, and look how much better the hardware in my desktop is, yes it isn't top of the line, but it's still a lot better than my laptop.
