Help stabilizing 5GHz

Thread Starter
Okay, so my temps are great I have a pretty nice cooling system setup. I got the computer turned on at 5GHz and 1.440v, ran a 14 hour prime 95 test and stopped it and declared it stable. Apparently I ran the wrong test, I don't know what test it was but it wasn't blend. I just updated Prime95 to the latest version and it for some reason automatically starts testing as soon as you open the application, and I assumed that was the standard blend test.

I got a couple blue screens, one while playing bf3 and another while just browsing or idling....

So I tried to up the volts a little and run it again, I upped it to 1.448v and it blue screened after a little over 3 hours of blend, then I upped the voltage to 1.464v and it blue screened again around the same time ( a little over 3 hours). So before now, I have had my vcore on offset and LLC Level 3, the last time that gave me 1.464 was +0.100v on LLC Level 3.

So this time instead of upping the volts I just changed it to +0.100v on LLC Level 2. Now its giving me a voltage of about 1.488. I just started running prime95 blend to see if this will work now, What do you think, should I have done that ? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

i suggest that you tell us what exactly your cooler is and what temps are smile.gif would help a lot <3.

i see you are using h100 WC. what are the temps by the way?

well at 1.440-1.448 they were around 60, on the 1.464v they were around like 65c

and now on 1.488 its showing around 70-73c, one of them peaked up to 81c

Edit: the voltage CPU-Z is showing between 1.488-1.504

^ I ran prime 95 with the above settings at 5.0GHz and 1.49v but somtimes the volts would spike up to 1.512 and the temps were getting really high, like in the 90's.... But it was coming up on 12 hours. I had ran the test for LITERALLY 11 HOURS AND 55 MINUTES. I was about to stop the test at 12 hours and call it stable, but then my computer just shuts off randomly out of nowhere, it was not a blue screen, just an instant shut down. Do you think this was because the temps might have reached tj max? I wasn't watching the temps when it shut off.....

Also during the 11 hours and 55 minutes, the temps would be anywhere from 60c-75c, only sometimes peaking in the 80s and rarely in the 90s. Would it be safe to call this stable? If not what do you suggest doing frown.gif

Instant power-off is definitely not stable. Note that if it were stable, reaching TJMAX would have just throttled the cpu by slowing it down some, not shutdown entirely (hope you didn't disable overload protection).

Temps and vcore fluctuations are normal as Prime alternates from low-intensity loads (corresponding to high FFTs, low-end of loaded temps, high-end of loaded vcore -- yes sounds counter-intuitive) to high-intensity loads (corresponding to low FFTs, high-end of loaded temps, low-end of loaded vcore due to droop under higher current). If you look at results.txt in your Prime directory, you might be able to see what load it was working on just before it shut-down (or it might be an earlier load due to the write buffer not being flushed yet).

Next logical state is to increase vcore a bit but if you haven't played around with CPU PLL (lowering it some below 1.7v) and/or VCCIO (increasing it especially if you have 4 dimms filled and/or using 8GB sticks), try playing around with those while keeping vcore where you were.

Might also be good to enable Real Temp logging or even better, Aida 64 sensor logging so that you'll have an idea what state the computer was in just in case you get another shutdown result.

Thank you very much, I have not touched the CPU PLL or the VCCIO. So to confirm you suggest lowering my CPU PLL in the 1.6xx area and increaseing my VCCIO ?

and I did have real temp up and running on my pc when it shut off

Edit: Also, I have a 3770k being delivered tomorrow which I want to get to 5GHz.... How did you get yours to 5ghz? did you remove the IHS and replace the tim or something? if not, what kind of beast cooling do you have?

Edit2: Also, My CPU PLL was set to auto, how do I tell what the actual value was?

I see from your rig that you're running 16GB at 1866. Try increasing VCCIO first to around 1.00v - 1.10v if it's at around 0.95 auto (and since you've already reached almost 12 hours on auto VCCIO, don't go to the yellow zone). Decreasing CPU PLL has helped others as well. Mine was 1.55v

disclaimer: YMMV and risks are all yours and all that wink.gif

enable log file under Settings to record while it runs. Don't forget to turn it off later.

Just got very lucky on the proc (just water cooling on 360 rad). Did not remove the IHS though was thinking of doing that before I knew what it could do. Fortunately, I thought of doing a before and after comparison so tested it first before removing. Not going to do "after removal" testing anymore biggrin.gif

CPU PLL auto is usually 1.80. I don't know about ASROCK bios but Asus bios has voltage monitors. Alternatively, use programs like HWMonitor or Aida64.

Yes, my mother board has a value between the setting and my manual value. IT was like this:

CPU PLL 1.8xx Auto

I'm guessing the 1.8 is the current value of the cpu pll, I was always under the assumption was the max that it could go, from a previous inquiry

thanks so much for your help biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

did you pay attention to the code you got from the blue screen? You can look up the last 2 digits of it and get a good idea of what went wrong. I don't know if your mobo supports it or has options for it but my ROG MVG had RAM presets to adjust for overclocking performance fixes or compatibility fixes. I selected the OC fix from the 3 presets and it stabilized mine.
