I would still recommend turning down the NB / HT Link frequency, especially if they're 2000+. I was finding if I didn't do that I'd experience stability issues at even stock frequencies, unless you've already got your VRM cooler in place.

Hey there. Your comment interests me.

What would you recommend I put the NB / HT Link frequency at for the completely stock FX 8150 in this board?

I won't have the heatsink for probably quite some time...as I'm sure gigabyte will take a while to ship.

Actually if you would be so kind as to post your own opinion of all the clocks/voltages to set the stock 8150 to for stability, I'd greatly appreciate it.
this might and might not help, as i have the same board and i also have a athlon 640 which has a rating of 95W. when i try to stress test it at stock clocks, my mobo freezes too. it started to happen after the bios update, so try downgrading. mine came with F7 OOB and said "am3+ bios installed" so try downgrading your bios.

I just got a VRM heatsink I bought on NewEgg a week ago, VRM temps seem to be stablized quite a bit. Reminder that my FX6100 temps are 'cooler' than the 8100, but I've also got an OC.

After an hr of GTAIV i'm seeing max 55 core temps and 57 socket temps, with VRM topping at 67C. This is far better than it was before, it used to fluctuate with a mind of its own, going over 80 and sometimes over the 100 degree barrier

I just got a noctuas downblowing cpu cooler and that should help a lot with this board, too.

I posted earlier my CPU NB and NB frequencies are both set the same speed as my RAM, 1866MHz. If you've got 1600 RAM, I don't see how you'd see much of an improvement by going more than 1866 NB. I truly believe this board in particular has a big problem with NB frequencies over 2000MHz specifically, in nearly all of my tests in the past as soon as I set either NB above 2000MHz I'd be crashing.

As for your voltages specifically, most of mine are all stock -- the only ones I've changed are the CPU VID to 1.400 (because of my OC), the CPU NB increase +.005, and a very mild NB increase to 1.100 as per G-Skill's recommendation for my Sniper RAM on my board.

I think you can reach great stability by entering proper RAM timings and voltages, limiting the NB freq and slightly bumping the NB voltage.

Keep in mind you should be running the latest F9 bios -- it's got VRM overheat protection and it also fixes multiple CPU throttling issues.

I'm also having this same exact issue. I find it interesting on the Official CPU support list for the Gigabyte 970a-d3 that the FX-8140 is listed but not the FX-8150.....

Anyway, I get Blue Screens and freezes and it's really getting out of hand. This thread has helped immensely. On a fresh Windows 7 Ult. 64 it would freeze and blue screen right out of the box and continues today. It is utterly stock. I'm not doing any overclocking or fluff programs. I would also sometimes get Windows booting into a 'Recovering from an error'. Windows would not start and have to restore itself to last known good configuration.

By this thread's suggestions, I have updated to Bios F9 just now. And I have requested a VRM heatsink from Gigabyte.

I also RMA'd my RAM thinking that was it. My RAM is ADATA DDR3 1333 2 x 4GB. I know the OP made changes to his timings. How do you find out what the timings should be? Is that what auto-fills? Is that the SPD column? What the BIOS detects on the sticks?

OP, I also got this MB/CPU combo from CyberPowerPC in March. And I'm with you, about to throw it out the window...

I need to check what my CPU fan is when I get home.
My PSU is 850W Raidmax Plus Gold
MSI Radeon HD 6850 (Which did come with Afterburner OC fluff but I uninstalled that early on)

EDIT: Gigabyte just replied to my request:
Dear Customer, the FX8150 has not been approved for use on your listed MB model. This could be the cause of your freezes. Please use a validated processor on your MB produce as listed on our CPU support list. Rev 1.4 has not been released. The VRM heatsink would not fit your revision model.

ffs..

Great thread, guys. Has helped me narrow down my own challenges a lot. Thx!

Haven't solved, yet though. Any guidance on RAM config for below slightly different equip?

All new out of box, no clocking, no custom...
  • GA-990FXA-UD3 rev.1.2 (FE BIOS)
  • FX-8350
  • GeIL EVO Leggera DDR3-1866 (4x8GB)
  • Prolimatech Megahalems
  • PSU Silentmaxx 600w
  • Zotac GTX-580 AMP2
  • Win 7 SP1 x86 (all updates incl. Bulldozer patches)

I get the exact same 15min freezes and intermittent mouse lags w/o any duty on CPU. Now currently RAM shows as 1333 - I can fix that through BIOS. I haven't found a newer BIOS - so I stick with v.6. Memtest on RAM comes out fine.

Only error sources I can think of are;
  1. Power supply - 600w should be enough though... (we are not talking about crashes under heavy gaming but moving the mouse from left to right...)
  2. RAM timings? Any suggestions?
  3. Defect CPU or MoBo?

TIA folks...

k guys... xd with a diagnosis here.  The problem is the RAM PSU motherboard CPU actually why did I cross out motherboard, it is that.... and the CPU too, come to think of it.  This may be an issue of lack of VRM system capacity.

I'm curious as to whether the freezing is the new VRM protection feature of GA-970A-D3's F9 BIOS in action.  In any case, it's a good thing; if this feature weren't activating, your system would pretty much be at risk of catching fire.  (Read: About VRMs & MOSFETs, in my sig)

There are a lot of things to blame for the lack of capacity and why your motherboard VRM system is not pushing this setup properly.  One to begin with is the low phase count (4+1).  FX-81XX are extremely power intensive (and I don't use the bold and underlines humbly) and I could almost say need a 6+2-8+2 phase for most reliable operation.  As well, you run a CM Hyper 212+, which effectively removes all VRM cooling.  No heat is being moved.  This stresses your VRM setup to the point where it may be hitting both the heat threshold as well as the capacity threshold (VRM capacity lowers with more heat)

It seems to make sense as the CPU is at stock clocks (i.e. there should be no instability, the board properly supports the 8150) and everything is only happening with a very intensive system load.

Unless you have a Rev 1.3 970A-D3 (VRM heatsink installed) I would seriously recommend getting a different board for your 8150.  You may be able to solve the problem by simply ensuring those VRMs are cooled (replace the stock cooler?) but don't push the clocks or voltage.  If you are going to be going through frequent intensive (i.e. all 8 cores used) gaming or video editing or whatever intensive task, I recommend a new board with a larger VRM system for lower board heat levels, higher reliability and higher lifetime.

Regards, the GA-990XA/970A series owners' club manager

Huh I have the ga-970a-ds3 which isn't heatsinked, a 8120 @4ghz and a huge noctua havik 140 preventing any air from cooling the vrms and I haven't had any problems. (I've ordered a new one but just thought I'd mention that)

I fixed my rig back in august and haven't had a single crash since.

My problem ended up being the relationship between north bridge clock and hyper-transit clock. One isn't supposed to be above the other; and, like someone posted in this thread, one really doesn't need to be above 2000.

Even in the bios when you highlight the clock it says "should not be higher than ".

Forgive me for not knowing exact names and clocks but my bios settings were defaulting to violate its own rule and was above 2000.

I changed both clocks to under 2000 and either the same or one under the other (forget) and zero problems since...

I don t agree with the HT lowering soccercake7.

The time for Gigabyte to finally know what the default HT value for FX is has come.2600 MT is the stock value for FX.

The setting should be automatically set at 2600 MT as per FX specs.
They even state the HT in the CPU support list on one column (it s specified doubled) .

It seems though that the default for them is 2400 MT or even lower so they "increase" stability. If they need to make them stable at factory HT then maybe GIgabyte has something wrong in the mobos design.
And yes for FX-s this specific clock brings more performance.

I even ask my self if the Bulldozer performance is not halved by some HT bottlenecks on this AM3 + architecture mobos chipsets.

Well I haven't had a crash since.

So either being above 2000 was the problem OR (more likely) the fact my HT was higher than my NB was the problem

In the BIOS it even has a red-letter warning, "HT should not be higher than NB"; yet it was defaulting to be higher.

SO either lowering it below 2000 or just making it less than or equal to NB has given me zero problems....
