IB was just a 'what happens if we do this' move by Intel.

Since AMD is no longer squeezing their balls, they are half on vacation.

Didn't AMD already give a statement that they have given up competing on the high end with Intel? So I don't see how this chip will come close to taking on a quad i7, possibly an i5 in HEAVILY mulithreaded apps.

Oh and I like how you assume you know more than others in the internet.....wth.gif

No... i7s "eight cores" are logical cores. An i7 is just a quad with each cores split into two. An FX processor has modules means each is two cores with shared memory and pipeline.

One of the things I've learned (the hard way) when it comes to the interwebs, you never know the details of who you're talking to ... for all we know, he works at Intel ... and close enough to the design team lol.

Anyway, this is awesome. I've been waiting for AMD to make a better comeback than the FX8150 and this gives me some hope. The i3's stole the budget-minded builders from the AMD camp. If this turns out well, this chip (and the future ones) might compete very well with the higher-end SB's in regular tasks (gaming, etc.) and do some serious damage in heavily-threaded apps ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... me likey ^_^.
The BD architecture is huge and has a lot of potential, once they improve IPC and sort out power issues, it's gonna be a beast ... the only problem is that Intel isn't sitting around while they do this either ...

Yeah. They are 8 real integer cores, there is no debating that. 8 real cores with shared resources is the best way you could say it. Though some will argue 8 cores sharing resources isn't 8 true cores. The best we can get by with is saying AMD isn't following the traditional overall CPU design compared to previous generations and leave it at that.

I am hopeful that these will at least keep AMD in competition with i5's. Also, saying AMD will never catch Intel again is naive. While unlikely in the next several years, they have shown they can do it. Not saying they ever will again, but it can happen.
I am not going to be so hyped for this, could be a bad release like bulldozer.. lets just hope that AMD have picked up their game before I decide to buy any of their CPU's again...

lets see....

Ivy bridge uses less power then sandy? YEP
Has higher IPC? Yep
Runs cooler stock? Yep.
And When overclocked to 4.6 (Most reach that before having heat issues) it beats a 5ghz sandy YEP

Explain to me how it's a bust?

You could drop an Ivy chip into your system right now. Regardless this is a bad argument. Because AMD sticks with sockets so long they lose out feature wise. Hasn't it been confirmed already no PCI 3.0 for PD?
