Questions regarding SSDs

Hi guys!

So today, my sig rig, couldn't boot up to Windows and displayed an error message similiar to this. "Pri master hard disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, backup and replace". I suspected that the drive may be going bad as the PC startup time has been quite slow. This error message and a SeaTools for windows check confirmed that it is going bad.

I disabled SMART in BIOS and it could boot to windows. To my research and understanding, my HDD is going to fail soon, is this correct? So i thought of getting an SSD instead of a traditional drive to replace it. This is what i intend to do.

1) Install the new SSD on SATA 3. My current drive is on SATA 2.
2) Use clonezilla to clone the SATA 2 HDD to my SSD.
3) Remove the SATA 2 HDD when i am done and boot normally on the new SSD.

I have a few questions here.
1) The contents of my HDD is only 200GB of a 500GB drive. I intend to buy a 240GB SSD drive. Will i be able to clone the data successfully as my data is less than the destination drive or does the 'original' drive itself have to be smaller than the destination, with lets say, using Gparted? In other words, do i have to use Gparted to shrink my 500GB drive to fit the 200GB data and have 200GB +300Gb partitions and then clone from there?

2) Will i have to 'repair' my bootloader with the Windows CD after i successfully cloned the SATA 2 HDD?

Thanks.

You should be able to clone it right over as it will only be 200gb thumb.gif you can always just take a system image with Windows 7 and use that too rolleyes.gif

Possibly, but unlikley. If you use a system image, all should go well and it will be identical to the last drive (Just alot faster tongue.gif)

Just joking!
Quote:
What is a system image?

A system image is an exact copy of a drive. By default, a system image includes the drives required for Windows to run. It also includes Windows and your system settings, programs, and files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or computer ever stops working. When you restore your computer from a system image, it's a complete restoration—you can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced with the contents of the system image.

Although this type of backup includes your personal files, we recommend that you back up your files regularly using Windows Backup so that you can restore individual files and folders as needed. When you set up Windows Backup, you can let Windows choose what to back up, which will include a system image, or you can select the items that you want to back up and whether you want to include a system image. For more information about setting up Windows Backup, see Back up your files.

No worries, everyone has to start somewhere thumb.gif

Cool! Is it reliable and more effective than using Clonezilla? Also, my Windows copy is an OEM one. Will using this backup screw the system? I know it has to do with a point system, but i am afraid that Windows will 'overly recognise' the change and block me out.

EDIT: This Windows backup basically means that once i do my backup, i have to manually install Win 7 again and then use the restore feature in Win 7? Its not like Clonezilla where i can just Ghost the whole drive and not worry about anything else?

You will need a windows 7 repair disc in order to install the system image. Those can work as well if you prefer thumb.gif

I see. Thanks man!

But after reading up on this cloning from a regular HDD to an%r0SSD, i think its just better for me to start fresh on the SSD. Too many potential problems i see.

Anyway, with my sig rig and its UEFI BIOS, can i, without problems, set my SSD to main and do not set/ Or set as secondary boot to my 500 GB drive? What i am afraid of is that i will get a screen that tells me which i wanna boot or it will boot up the 500GB HDD. I had this problem countless times and i had to 'k)ll' the bootlaoder in the drive i do not want to use anymore, even when i disabled it in BIOS. Basically, i want to be able to access the old drive in its raw form, without it being detected as the 'drive i wanna boot'. Is this possible in the new UEFI BIOS?

I think it's better to start fresh too because otherwise the hard drive's alignment will be copied over to the solid state drive's alignment thereby making it impossible to properly align the SSD for its optimal performance (which is either 1024K or 4096K).  Solid state drives perform their best when they are aligned to either 1024K or 4096K.

Anyway, to answer the question:  as long as the hard drive is not connected during the installation, you will not have this problem.  This isn't because of the new UEFI BIOS, but it's just how it has always been.  Leave the secondary drive disconnected and then reconnect it after the installation of Windows is complete.
