Fried HD 6970

Thread Starter
Okay all I've gota bit of an issue. I just finished my rig reassembly with a new water system. Right off the bat i power up the system and it looks like a firework show is going on down on the GFX board. So I pulled it disassembled it and it appears that it somehow the voltage regulator chip on the upper left hand side of the board face has just well fried. I'm curious what could have caused this issue so i dont fry my last GPU. The hardware used for the build is listed below. Let me know if you all need anymore info.

GFX - XFX HD 6970 X 3 - Switech Komodo Block
Mobo - Crosshair V - EK blocks
CPU - FX8150 - EK Block
Mem - 16 Gbs Corsair GT - EK Block

Pics would be nice to identify the problem...on the reference 6950's (which looks exactly like the 6970) there's a VRM located on the top left of the board, it's either you forgot to put TIM / thermal pads on them or just forgot it completely.

Also from the looks of it your PSU isn't as reliable as it is so that might also be the cause.

Yes its the VRM, as for TIM I used IC Diamond. Before I started reassembly the PSU was operating just peachy. Also look below for the pics of the cards. Also I was only able to upload the two pics my internet is horrible in the country i reside WP_000156.jpg 1734k .jpg file . WP_000155.jpg 1311k .jpg file

I would suggest filing out your rig-specs so we can identify the problem a little better if you don't mind...

Did you do a leak test? It is possible the block had a leak...

Okay I finished updating my current rig build. Also I did do a leak test for a 48 hour period with no leaks with massive alterations in ambient tempuratures. I do think that it may be the water block that did it though I believe. Looking at it more and more it looks like it may have had power actuall touch the waterblock meaning the VRM area need to be completly covered in that entire area. Thats the only thing i can see it being. I'll try uploading additional pictures later.

DAMN O.o that looks nasty.... You said it was a reassembly? As in you were adding the watercooling? or did this happen to be a NEW card being put into the system? i remember you saying you still had another gpu? Just wondering so we can rule out the card being/going bad.... =P that being said, even though i am an AMD/ATI guy all the way i have to say the HD6900 series is know for high temps and other crazy stuff... even though im about to drop my second 6950 into my build hopefully tomorrow... (waiting on packages is the worst.... >.<) ...

Well i tried to upload those pics last night what an epic failure. As for reassembly im talking about adding the water cooling. I know they run toasty but the system was barely able to turn on before the fireworks show insued. Yes I only have one 6970 left, but if it cooks sapphire toxic 7970 here i come. I agree on the whole waiting on packages thing its a buzzkill especially when you live in the middle of no where.

That tends to happen when you get the pcb wet. Did you check for leaks before starting it up or while bleeding?

Yes I did I had a tiny leak on my reservoir and stopped it before it did anything. I had everything bled and leak tested before I even powered up perhaps some got on the board that i missed. I had all the awesome leak protection measures stuffed everywhere just in case of a fault. I can take my last card apart again and let it sit out in some sun that should take care of any additional water traces in like a week if not less here. 49C is awesome fun when its the outside temp.
