Did you use distilled water in the loop? Everyone is saying you possibly got it wet but honestly I dont think that was the case if you used distilled. Reason I say is because when I strapped my ek fc block on my 7970 I had a rotary leak and it got all onto my pcb and I blew out the bit that I could and fired it right on up. I know blowing it out with a duster couldnt have got it all out.

Yeppers i used distilled water and i have an air compressor that i used on it before firing it up. Like i said im not sure *** happened, thats why i think i need to apply more TIM around the VRM to protect against shorting.

Look at the discoloration around the mem chips. It looks like moisture to me. Have you noticed it? The blown vrm is your memory regulator btw.

Distilled can conduct electricity, it just has a lot more resistance to it than tap water, but it is still a conductor.

The kicker of the discoloration is that it was like that when i seperated the orignal gpu cooler. I was getting artifacting and a low 3dmark score before on the cards so maybe i got a shaddy remanufactured or i cooked the hell out of them when i was running folding at home. Thanks for the info on what component it actually was btw. My knowledge of some of the smaller parts is limited. So what does everyone think i have one card left that looks exactly the same as the other discoloration and all, I've disasembled them again and checked for water or anything and its a big ole negative. If anything i would be willing to sell off these waterblocks at a heck of a discount to get something else.

Ok, then that is what I call for lack of a better description, sweating of the thermal pads. The oils soak the surrounding area. It's been a while now so if you were drying the other board it is good to go. I would inspect the dead card for any tell-tale signs of water damage, white spots, residue, etc.

I figured it was oil residue but heck ive never seen it before on any other type of graphics card i've disasembled. I've looked everywhere for some form of water damage in any of those forms. Like i said i was getting artifacting before from figuring it was an error from windows since my raid array was becoming unstable. Now looking back I may have cooked the cards from folding at home for as long as it was maybe the boards just couldn't take the stress of the change and popped. I'm waiting for the 7990's now or the sapphire toxic 7970's.

Damn that sucks man...good thing I have my 6950 2gb reference card on a universal GPU block, inspected all my RAM and VRM fets before I installed it and done leak testing.

It also could be possible some water got trapped under the RAM chips and that shorted out the VRM like tsm said...most likely that was the source.
