Gainward non-reference GTX 580 EK 5x0 watercooled twin SLI volt mod

As you can see I am running a twin Gainward GTX SLI EK 5x0 water-cooled setup with EC6 coolant.

I have the cards overclocking nicely at the moment and can modify both the base and memory clocks.

I have moved from the ASUS P8 Z77 Premium to a Rampage IV with the voltage regulator wires as standard.

What are the safe parameters for upping the voltage and how do I fit them correctly?

I understand from other threads 1.1v is 'std' and 1.125 is about 'normal OC' with upper limit 1.2v maximum with a BIOS flash ?

How do I know if I need to overvolt? does it fix the unstable crashes and event messages that occur when the clock is too high?

I have a lot of cooling on these cards, each has its own loop with a designated XSPC RS360 triple radiator.

I can push them very hard if necessary.......but how hard can I push?

Has anyone else got a twin GTX 580 setup similar?

I saw some european guys at a uni were running Quad GTX 580 SLI on an ASUS Extreme mobo and had a benchmark run in the world top 10! (Early 2012)

That was with the top end six core Sandybridge-E i7 3960x CPU and not the quad core i7 3820 limited multiplier.

I'm trying to get a stable OC GPU platform before I upgrade the processor, overclock the one I have or increase the GPU count. My CPU needs to bed in really.

I have been running these cards for about a year so I know they can be pushed a bit.

Please could someone throw me some useful clocks and safe voltages to work with??

You've got more than enough cooling for 1.2v, but 1.2v isn't good for 24/7 use, use it only for gaming. You can set accounts in Afterburner.
BIOS flash is easy. When you're overvolting you MUST be sure your PSU can handle them. If you cross your PSUs limits you risk losing your cards or PSU. But in most cases it just shuts off from too much wattage.
So if you're sure, you can just set them to 1.2v and find the highest stable clocks. When stability testing stay alert for high mossfet temperature and squeal. If it's giving away too much noise, your PSU isn't strong enough or the cards can't handle so much volts.
DON'T use furmark or OCCT for stability. They don't test stability and will kill everything.

Good luck overclocking. thumb.gif

Question: What IS the best thing to stress test with?

AND for a W/Ced 580 (EK fullcover block) what is the highest voltage you recommend for gaming.... I'm scared of 1.2v I really don't wanna fry my card...
On the other hand yeah I'm O/Cing so I run that risk ANYWAY I just want to minimize it...
I'm fairly certain my Corsair TX850w can handle it.... so PSU not an issue and having a Rampage III Extreme it has that 4 pin molex near the PCIe slots SUPPOSEDLY for extra power but idk.....

Any other advice is also welcome.... THANKS

My preferred benchmarks are: Unigine Tropics and Heaven, 3Dmark Vantage, Crysis benchmark tool... For a full cover block 1.2v isn't a big deal... You can go for max 1.212v straight away, no problem, just as long as you switch it back to stock using AB... Like I said... you can use accounts for it... Use 1 account for gaming (max volts and stable clocks), and another one for 24/7 use (stock volts, clocks) web, movies,...
You don't need that molex... It's just for those extreme junkies that have monsterclocked 4x GPUs... But really it doesn't mean anything other than reducing current loads on the 24pin... You don't need it....
You're good to go here... can you raise the volts to 1.212v in AB?

Is there a way to go above 1.212V in a BIOS mod for a GTX 580?

Thanks.

Completely, if the mossfets and core aren't overheating, +80°C being the deadline... Don't use it for 24/7 cuz it will shorten its lifespan... Again, use profiles in afterburner
what are your temps?

At the full 1.212V it topped out at 86C. Then for some reason went Artifact and blur crazy, so idk if i damaged it or not. 86C and 1.212V shouldnt damage it right? Maybe 90+C but not 86C?

Thanks

Note: 1.212V @ 975/1950/2100

If 1.212v damaged my 470 at 71°C, 86°C can damage yours... Mossefets are suffering... When did it crash? What were you doing? playing or stress testing?
