How does learning CS:S work?

Hey guys, I was looking to pick up CS:S but before I do I have a few questions about it.

I heard you can actually face bots to practice before facing actual players, would those kills/deaths and such be counted towards stats or is it only kills against players that counts towards stats?

Also, is joining rooms in it anything like Team Fortress 2? Does it actually download files of some sort to your computer when you join a room?

I'm not too sure about the bots and stats, but I don't think they count. I wouldn't worry too much about the stats as you may end up playing in fun servers (surf, gg, zombie) that will mess up your kdr anyays. It's not like CS: GO where you have an ELO rank.

As for rooms, do you mean servers? If so then yes, it will download all the non-stock resources that specific server is using. A lot of servers use mani mod so once you join a few different servers there won't be much more to download. Some annoying servers have a huge amount of custom sounds and admin skins for no reason though, but the majority know alot of people ditch the server if they notice a lot of downloads.

My steamapps user folder is probably around 10gb of just maps and sounds.

Ugh, that's unfortunate. Is there a way I can disable downloading those files from servers like you can in TF2?

No one knows if the bot kills count towards kill/death stats though?

you can block all custom files from servers or just block custom sounds from servers, playing with bots shouldn't get recorded to your stats (not sure since i never play with bots) but if they do there is an option in the "Multiplayer" tab that allows you to reset all your stats.

Yes, you can play against bots but that is like single player and it doesn't contribute towards online gameplay whatsoever. It is just there for lan parties and for fun...

I didn't know there even were Kill/Death stats. AFAIK the only kill/death are kept by each individual server you play on, and aren't global.

The bots are also a complete waste of time if you are wanting to practice and develop skills. You will just teach yourself bad habits by learning to play against them. I say don't worry about your stats and just have fun playing the game. Nobody cares about your stats anyways... If you are wanting to get into a good clan just play on their servers and kick some ass. I don't think anybody is going to care about your total score. They will just care about your performance while they are monitoring you.

The bots in CS:S follow predetermined paths and snipe from predictable places. Basically after you play a certain map with them for about 15 minutes you are going to learn their habits and exploit them. I can get a 20:1 kill to death ratio against the hardest bots and then go into a server against players and have a negative KD ratio...

When you make the bots harder they don't get any smarter, their aim just gets really good. They are still predictable and act nothing like real human players.

Yeah I think this is the case. I've only looked up my stats on individual servers. I've never seen total stats anywhere.

I don't think a total score would even be relevant since servers have such different rules and settings. It wouldn't even make sense to compare stats of people from different servers considering they might have different weapons allowed, different gravity settings, different $ settings etc. Some servers even give you $16000 every round making it easy to always have the best guns.

Bots on expert in the more open areas might aswell have aimbots. They get unrealistic aimbot like shots with basically no recoil in an instant in open areas most times. Its completely fake to online but still takes very good aim to beat them & sharpens my aim.

OP the ai is appalling even for the time the game was released. They are only a challenge in open straights.

Thanks for the info guys. I went ahead and snagged it, probably gunna end up learning maps and bringing up my aim against bots.

If I were to block downloading custom files from servers, would I still be able to join the servers that actually have files like that? I want to block the files, but would that mean the servers I join would be limited to people with the same settings?
