[theverge]Five years after the iPhone, carriers are the biggest threat to innovation

It's even worse. The carriers now have gained the upper hand in terms of the power of the relationship with the handset manufacturers. And they're starting to tell the handset manufacturers what to build. And if Nokia and Motorola don't listen to them, well, Samsung and LG will. So the handset manufacturers are really getting these big thick books from the carriers, telling them "here's what your phone's gonna be."

I disabled internet on my phone, being charged $20 for 2Gb IMO is a steal, I would end up with $100+ bills every month.

Some days I hate capitalism.

Apple isn't doing nearly as much damage as the carriers are.

Looking at you, AT&T, Verizon.

its true apple only makes you pay 300$ for a subsidized phone ... while the carriers either have HONORABLE service ... and you are lucky to get a signal or they charge you as much as they can ... MORE then my car payments for a stupid cell phone ... so no apple i could care less about what you charge ... (stop suing everyone for your dumb wanna be patents lol)

Ya I never thought about it, but I guess it's true. Maybe... everyone should sue each other.

yeah its honestly getting ridiculous, with AT&T there is no true "unlimited" plan, you purchase a bandwidth plan, if you go over that data usage, they bill the crap out of you. I think what they fear is the speed of 4g is good enough to hack the phone and have your pc or laptop rigged to it, instead of paying for cable internet people would be flooding the wireless network.
these phone companies really need to figure out a flat fee, or lets say if you purchase their internet as well as phone plan you get unlimited data usage on your phone. which would stop bandwidth hogs. there's always a solution.

I don't really see how. Apple has more pull over the carriers that it works to the benefit of iPhone users. I don't have to deal with preinstalled bloatware or carrier controlled OS updates. Life is better as an iPhone user.

But yes, carriers are absurdly pricing their services. I still can't get over how expensive text messages are. Even going over the minutes...$0.45/minute? That's so stupid.
