mosquito killed my gtx 470 :( update: gpu died as of 3/3/2014

Thread Starter
a mosquito just killed my gtx 470 on my htpc. just a warning for everyone here in OCN. I learned my lesson the hard way. kinda not in the mood uploading pictures now. maybe later I'll upload some pics.

when I was playing Diablo 3 the screen suddenly froze with an orange screen. i knew it was the graphics card right away so I checked the graphics card voila. I saw a little roasted mosquito on the top of my graphics card. taking away 3-4 tiny little solder points with it thus killing my 2 year old graphics card which has no more warranty -.-

my advice to the OCN community.

1. never have intake fans without fan filters
2. never leave your side panel open esp when pc is open 24/7
3. never thought a bug spray and a computer can be associated with each other lol. keep insects away from our computer parts

RIP my gtx 470. it died fighting though (against the forces of diablo lol)

UPDATE: cleaned the burned area with wd40. i installed the graphics card again and it worked! ran heaven for 2 minutes and it ok. run diablo again then after a couple of minutes BOOM, it crashed. no display again (it really hates diablo lol). tried it on my main rig but now it's 100% dead and doesn't boot anymore. gave me a little hope about this video card

do you think I should give baking a shot?

EDIT:

the solders that the mosquito was on was definitely affected. should I bake it or try "poking" it with a soldering iron?

UPDATE 2:

UPDATE:

I baked my card at 240 degrees celcius (yea i know im an idiot. the heat is too much) for 8 minutes. after im done I saw black stickers fell of the tray where the graphics card was sitting on. then when I was letting it cool I found out that I had the heat at least 40 degrees higher frown.gif

I let it cool for 30 minutes then installed the graphics card again. omg it worked. IT'S ALIVE AGAIN smile.gif

I'm stress testing it atm. it has been running heaven benchmark 3.0 at max settings(basically its at full load) for 30 minutes now and temps drastically improved as well. I had to clean it up really good and replaced the tim with the noctua tim that came with the NH-D14. I just put a little and didn't bother spreading the tim coz I thought I "cooked" it too much. alas temps are great and the card is working again smile.gif man I hope it lasts. so happy right now biggrin.gif in your face you dead mosquito!

431

update 3:

ran msi kombustor for 30 minutes. it peaked at 68 degrees celsius. the new tim on the gpu greatly improved the temps

339

i hope it last long enough till I feel the need to get a new graphics card smile.gif

update 4:

card still works great, been stressing with kombustor and furmark and it's still alive and kicking. I have it overclocked now

just realized I never said where the insect actually landed. here is a reference pic of a gtx 470. click to see

FINAL UPDATE:

As of March 3, 2014, my gtx 470 finally died. I tried baking it again but no such luck. it seems like his time has come. I will miss you frown.gif

actual picture:

RIP Mosquito GTX 470. you lived for almost 2 years after the incident. good job hanging in there. may the silicon heavens treat you well thumb.gif

it was small and was a perfect fit on the tiny solder points close to the two 6 pin connectors. when I clean my htpc (which is in the living room) it's normal to see dead mosquitos inside the case. I clean it once every 2-3 months I thought it wasn't a big deal. lesson learned

2- Why would you do this, unless you were a professional dust collector?
3- Don't spray bug spray on computer parts. It may leave conductive residue when it dries in and short something out. If you spray it on computer parts whilst they're on, expect it to short stuff out straight away.

If you're good with a solder gun you can try to fix it. Or you can try baking it.

I doubt I could do it. it's really tiny and even smaller than a fix I did with a broken xbox 360 wireless reciever. I really doubt it can be fixed by hand. afaik it's 3-4 solder points that it took away. when I scraped away the mosquito the solder came off as well

even my sig rig doesn't have the sidepanel because I like looking at it. I don't relaly have fan filters (I clean my pc once every 2-3 weeks anyway) I've learned my lesson. ima buy fan filters asap and will have my side panel back again
