yeah I definitely learned my lesson. just mass murdered the little buggers this morning. id prolly have my fan filters by tomorrow or the day after that. I've never had fan filters on my case before because I clean my pc regularly. well not anymore. one damaged graphics card is enough for me. I won't let it happen again and hopefully other OCN members would do the same precaution that I just did. trust me having a graphics card die because of a widdle annoying insect is not fun
post #122 of 190
I had a GPU inhale a few ladybugs and smear insect guts all over the heatsink fins, but this is the first time I've heard of a GPU being shorted by an insect.

As for fan filters, I usually omit them. They tend to restrict airflow pretty severely, especially if they aren't cleaned religiously. Personally, I'd just as well dust out the case as clean the filters. There are also other openings in nearly any enclosure, where a mosquito could also get in.

Doesn't that make you feel better?

I've just returned from lunch to find this... YUCK!

Hopefully your card stays stable. A friend had an old 8800GTX crap out on him. He resurrected it with baking but it only lasted a week or something. Though those cards didn't die of mosquitos wink.gif

the bright side is I know where the problem is which is the solder points that were affected. after the baking they did look a lot better and the solder points became shiny again (before it had a darkish color) like what I said hopefully it lasts

I never leave the side panels off of my computer. It interrupts the air flow. 4 case fans, intake at bottom, intake at front, exhaust at top, and exhaust at rear is much better than leaving your side panels off.

I actually had my side panels on with my htpc. my fans didn't have fan filters though so it sucked the mosquito then landed on the graphics card. I'm never gonna let it happen again. I got rid of my custom made honey-mesh fan grills and will replace it with a not-so aesthetically pleasing but bug-proof fan filters biggrin.gif hopefully it doesn't compromise the airflow too much. after this horrible experience I'd rather settle for a lower overclock and higher temps than a half dead graphics card. I did ressurect my gtx 470 again but still I still look at it as half dead and I'd prolly never overclock it or put it into as much stress than I used to. Id prolly sell this dirt cheap and get a used 570 asap

Just one more reason why mosquitoes are horrendous.

Might I suggest you clean the hell out of your oven before you cook in it again...

taken from a comment post on one of the "baking" sites:

"I was trolling thru and came across this article -- interesting. Here's some technical tidbits, from a chemist who works in the electronics industry, if anyone cares:
1) "RoHS" compliant means a couple things. First, it makes this harder to do because compliance means lead-free solder, and high-tin content in Pb-free solders make them reflow at much higher temps. It also means there are no flame retardants containing certain bromine-based molecules, but it doesn't mean bromine or halogen-free. Still, the alternatives should be stable to well past 300C. I'd be more concerned about what's coming off the green soldermask coating, likely all kinds of acrylates depositing onto your oven's walls. Ick. " - some dude, apparently a chemist

I wouldn't take the chance.
