also, Terrible Terrible Damage.

OP, if you baked it, make sure the thermal pads are still working, or else your card will die about a week from now.
When i first saw this post i thought it was a joke and thought i could use a laugh. Silly me. After reading all of the posts, I just finished today, I like the plastic screen idea fot those that dont have a side pannel on their case.
I had a 8800gtx that had issues with a custom cooling solution by the card manufacturer, turns out the aluminum cover/cooler would touch or get very close to the 6 pin connector. It died and i used the oven technique to revive it . Yes it still works and I think its better than before. I was skeptical at first but I dont even worry about it now. Yes I went back to origonal parts as i never had an issue before the swap.

Too bad this seemed to turn into a graphics card war while you were grieving about your card, but at least you are up and running.

Because of the heat i know there are some that have to run with their covers off and you might have saved them some grief with your post.
When i figure out how to rep. your post seems like a great place to use my first one.

Hang in there oh mighty mosquito warrior!

I actually have extra thermal pads here that I had years ago when I bought an accelero xtreme 5970. when I removed the cooler to my surprise the thermal pads are in perfect condition. not a single one was damaged when I removed the cooler. just installed it again with the same thermal pads and temps were still ok

"I was trolling thru and came across this article -- interesting. Here's some technical tidbits, from a chemist who works in the electronics industry, if anyone cares:
1) "RoHS" compliant means a couple things. First, it makes this harder to do because compliance means lead-free solder, and high-tin content in Pb-free solders make them reflow at much higher temps. It also means there are no flame retardants containing certain bromine-based molecules, but it doesn't mean bromine or halogen-free. Still, the alternatives should be stable to well past 300C. I'd be more concerned about what's coming off the green soldermask coating, likely all kinds of acrylates depositing onto your oven's walls. Ick. " - some dude, apparently a chemist
I wouldn't take the chance.

I am really glad you revived that GTX 470. Fermi really can take a beating. At least I know what to try for my cards in case I have problems with them down the road smile.gif

Next time put a mosquito net on, problem solved.

Plus it shouldn't hinder airflow much.

temps really improved as well. had the card for more than 2 years and never replaced the tims. first time I've seen my gx 470 peaking at only 68 degrees. it ran msi kombustor for 30 minutes. and im from mainla it's not really a cold place.

thinking of doing the same with my two gtx 480's. not sure how much TIM I have left though. would be a bummer if I ran out when I'm cleaning it. ima buy a tube and do the same with my sig rig
