12GB 7990... awesome for eyefinity. 

 

Only buy this card if you plan to run multi / high res monitors... like 2k/4k. If you get this for 1080p... it's like integrating a Formula One's engine into a Honda Civic...

You've obviously not looked much into the aftermarket tuner car scene. biggrin.gif

But yeah, 12GB of memory is totally insane and pretty much a waste for 99.99% of the people out there.

This particular card wouldn't be competing directly with the 690. The 690 is 2, 2GB cards. This is 2, 6GB cards. I doubt very much they would sell it for anything less than $999.

This is where I think the 7990 would be around $850. If the regular cards are ~$450, and you figure the 7990 will have 2x non-ghz performing chips, I would think somewhere around $850 give or take.

EDIT: Also, I would hope this pushes the 690 down some to closer to $900.

What I'm wondering is why can't a computer use the other "6"GBs? Is there some kind of limitation that doesnt allow it to use another cards VRAM?

Yeah 1 Gb is quite a bottleneck with eyefinity, however, for 6 Gb to make sense you would need to be running approx ~36 megapixels (at 0xAA and good quality without insane afterprocessing levels) i.e., 5x or 6x 1600/1440p Eyefinity and for that the card would need 5x or 6x displayports (preferably) or at the very least ability to drive 5x 1600p somehow.

The 3 Gb is sort of the sweet spot atm which is sort of exactly enough for 3x 1600p (or 6x 1080p) with about 30% to spare as predefined settings like to apply relatively high AA levels in games. Its unfortunate though that so limited number of cards in 79xx series is capable of driving 5+ screens in eyefinity and only one of them can do 5x 1600p (unless you overclock the DVI, which I have seen claims that can be done but have no personal experience with)
