I'll be waiting till the 8000 series to upgrade, they say next gen consoles will be here 2013. finally we will be seeing some true next gen graphics, with games like watch dogs, and prey 2.

According to Nvidia, you want to play BF3 with texture quality on Ultra, you better have a 1.5GB graphics card. That's for one monitor, presumably at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080. And this is only 2012. I'm not a psychic but suffice it to say.. games will use more VRAM in the future for higher-quality textures, and as everything approaches/approximates photorealism.. it's just going to get more and more VRAM hungry. It was only a year or 2 ago when everyone said 1GB was definitely enough for 1080p.
Now, 6GB per card might be overkill, but I really hope people aren't spending $1000+ on GPUs to game on a couple $150 1080p monitors. Hopefully something like 3x 2560x1440. Considering that's about 11MP and 5760x1200 is only about 6MP, and a 690 can't handle BF3 on 5760x1200, 6GB of VRAM seems pretty reasonable. Now, you might need Quadfire with a 2nd 7990 to max something like BF3 on 3x 2560x1440 monitors, but I digress.
I'm just curious, anyone care to say that the best 4-GPU, multi-monitor (again, not cheapie 1080p monitors) system would have 4x 680's in it? I'd wager you'll lose the argument, but go ahead, try.

Oh yes, the 690 does quite a bit well.. like 4 FPS minimum in BF3/Ultra at 5760x1200 without microstutter lachen.gif you guys..

Anything more than 4GB per GPU is not needed and is just a waste of money, period.
I'd be more concerned with it matching what the GTX 690 does and does well (controller for micro stutter, low power consumption, really quiet and cool) than how much VRAM the thing has.

AMD may be able to position the 7990 in a good spot with GE chips, since stock GE chips will perform as good or better than the 680. As far as the VRAM issue, 12gb isn't confirmed but if it happens - it is only for eyefinity 6. 3gb per GPU would be the main product -- and if they can price that in between 800-950$ AMD could very well have a great alternative to the 690.
