Has anyone ever though about making a linux box?

Thread Starter
I was just thinking about buying very cheap parts, and making a nice computer under $200 dedicated to linux so I don't have to go through the annoyance known as dual boot. I think it'd be pretty fun tongue.gif What Intel based cpu would you guys go with? tongue.gif

why not just make a VM....?

Oracle virtual box FTW. Unless you plan to leave it running 24/7, no real reason to buy a new computer all together.

I have a linux box.

I put it together with LGA775 parts. Currently it has a P4 521 running at 4.06GHz in it but I have an E5200 I plan on installing if I ever get around to it.

I also vote for VM. Why spend 200+ bucks to avoid dual boot? Building a 2nd computer would be like building a first, only installing linux on it.

I've had several over the years, even my servers were just junk computers that a company was throwing out. They normally work great for just about anything even with lesser power.

Although I've since gotten a few actual server racks from a few companies closing down and selling it's equipment for cheap, or just flat out giving it away. And they've got quite a bit more power.

I also vote for either a VM or even dedicated Pi.

A VM is probably best like everyone has said. I had one running on my sig-rig for a while and it was snappy. I only built a dedicated box because I had a lot of spare parts and just had to purchase a disk drive for $20. Unless you're going to be running it 24/7 like stated above or just have spare parts already, I'd do the VM.

I built a Linux box about a year ago with a used 1156 i3 a cheapo motherboard and some parts I had around.
I felt like it was kind of silly having a whole extra computer just to mess around with it. I don't have any real "need" to run Linux on a desktop so I ended up giving it to someone who had an even older laptop

yes we have thought about building a linux box here... lol

my suggestion would be

build a real computer with fully VT-D / IOMMU compatible hardware
put linux on it (gentoo of course)
add more linux VMs
add a windows VM
pass a graphics card or two through to the windows VM.

now windows is in its right place and you have an amazing machine that can do everything. all set. http://www.overclock.net/t/1205216/guide-create-a-gaming-virtual-machine/80_40#post_17633134

there are too many advatages of having windows in a VM for me to list them here, and according to that, the only disadvantage of poor 3d acceleration is a thing of the past. I can't believe there isn't more buzz about PCI passthrough, this is really the way forward.. It's a shame we even have to talk about windows at all, but such is life.
