Is a sound card worth the money

Currently i am using a Z68-Ud7 motherboard with steelseries siberia heaphones for night time sometimes, but mainly i use a sysetm similar to this http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/sony-sony-5-1-channel-3d-home-theatre-system-htss380-htss380/10170276.aspx?path=28adfb7df9954df2581ea59cf0a30c38en02 using an optical audio cable.

with a system like that for my audio and the motherboard i have, is it worth it for me to get a sound card, id spend up to 75 dollars on one. will i notice an increase in the audio quality for both gaming, and all around use? or not. my system specs are listed below if you want to know the rest.

thanks!

It depends on what your motherboard audio is. I'm guessing its probably not 5.1 though, so to use your speakers to there full potential, yes, you need an audio card.

This is a great sound card for your budget. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132006&Tpk=asus%20xonar%20dx
Its Dolby 7.1 and GX2.5.
And yes, with this sound card, you should easily notice the difference.

I'll never go back onboard sound again and I have a Xonar D1. It fits your budget. I use a decent 3 piece Logitech set and I can hear the difference vs running through onboard sound when I listen to music.

From what I've read, almost any add-on sound card is an improvement over onboard sound.

I use to think they never made much of a difference after I bought a Xonar D2. I then went back to onboard after about a year of using the card and everything just sounded horrible to me. Purchased a D2X and I am very happy again. I'm certainly no audiophile, but the difference is amazing.

the card recommended is nice, but like i said i am using an optical audio cable, which from what i understand is a better way to pass the audio through especially for surround sound systems. i was looking at something along the lines of this card http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829271001 especially since it has a front audio header as well.

any suggestions on something close to this

So I understand that you are going to use the Card only for your siberia V2?

If so just get this card : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132020&Tpk=xonar%20dg

It has dolby headphone, a build-in headphone amp, and it's 30$. I wouldnt buy a 90$ card to use with a steelseries headset. I mean, while the siberia v2 is decent, it's nowhere near as good as a ''real'' pair of cans.

Both have front audio, and both in your price range.

It's the same card. The D1 is PCI while the DX is PCIe. The DX require you to plug it in your PSU while the D1 dont.
