Hey guys,
I see a lot of threads started by people wanting to get a nice home server going.... Well I do too now! The problem is, the choices are mindboggling and I'm asking for YOUR help on this
I'm going to update this post in the topic to reflect what I am trying to sort out/work on during this process so it will be as quick and as painless as possible. Instead of doing a cookie cutter server, we are going to go through it one by one so I make the right choices, I don't need the server overnight but maybe by the time school starts!
So, my needs are as follows:
Proposed component list:
Currently asking for help on:
Deciding 4GB or 8GB RAM for $20 difference, Operating system choices, 7200rpm or Western digital RED for RAID-5. I know WD Green doesn't bode well with RAID-5 so that isn't a choice. I also save about $200 going with Seagate than WD.

Instead of doing a cookie cutter server, we are going to go through it one by one so I make the right choices, I don't need the server overnight but maybe by the time school starts! So, my needs are as follows:
- Home Media Server running some type of OS. I want to stream video to my Apple TV and sync music on iTunes libraries between the server and my Macbook Air. This is different than just Home Sharing because I need the files on both hard drives to be identical. I found a program called SuperSync to manage this but it's only Windows and Mac so my server will have to run Windows.
- Accessible remotely aka over the internet for just retrieving files.
- Possibly hosting as a small private game server in the future. (Need explanation on how to do this).
- Content accessible from an iPhone/iPad. There are some iOS apps that offer this but I'm not sure how or which to choose.
Proposed component list:
- Case: CFI A7879 with 200W power supply
- RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
- CPU/VGA/Motherboard: AMD Fusion Mini-ITX platform (ASRock E350M1/USB3)
- Hard drives: 4x 3TB RAID-5 - either $150 Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm or $199 Western Digital RED
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit or SYMBIAN (I hear it's easier than FreeNAS)
