horizontal or vertical mobo for watercooling?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I am working on my own design for a watercooling rig.

I was planning on using acrylic but to save money I am thinking of fiberglass and just buy the fabric and make my own molds.

I am planning on a MoRa 3 or a Phobya supernova 1260 as main radiator....most likely a 120 or 240 for the cpu.

So it would go MORA>gpu>120 or 240> CPU>RES>PUmp>bak to MORA

There are two seperate ways of doing it. I was thinking a vertical layout like in the silverstone FT02 or a horizontal layout for a topdown view.

with the vertical option I was thinking of integrating it into my desk with the radiator seperated under the desk. There is a shelf between the drawers that is pretty much useless and would be a perfect spot for a rad. Or it can also all be in one case as well

I would also have fans in the case but they would be minimal with just a couple blowing upwards on the mobo for some extra cooling performance.

Now the other option is with a horizontal tray up top so all the goodies can be viewed at all times.

The MoRa would be upfront with a front facia made of all fans so that air can also blow on the front and back of the tray.

I want to make this as clean a build as possible. Not wanting to have tons of inputs/outputs since I hardly use them anyway as my PC is mainly used for gaming. and mass storage is going to be done on a server.

Anyways, any and all input is appreciated. I am going to start trying to make some models in sketchup as soon as I can.

Horizontal is going to make the case very wide unless you're going with an ITX motherboard.

Are you sure you want that radiator up front like that? Longer cases, rather than wide, are easier to deal with imo.

width isnt going to be a problem in the space it is going to be in.

Even if I integrate it into my desk it can be a 14" cube with the radiator down below. However, that will limit me with going to any sort of LAN event. Which is why I am leaning away from that scenario.

I guess the other option would also be to just use my 650D for now and just get the stand for the MORA and build a case later. However, thats now the way I like things...I am generally a very neat person in my office and done like clutter with computers either.

I always liked my mb's horizontal, they were always easier to work on.

Not that much wider all things considered. A standard ATX tower like HAF 9xx is 9" wide, my H2gO is 13". I find that full towers are far more unwieldy, to say the least harder to bleed. Is it 40% wider? Sure. But anything suited to WCing in standard ATX towers is usually gigantic in every other dimension.

I'd go for the horizonatl setup, easier to view components, easier to work on IME. OP here's my setup to give you some ideas: 1024.jpg?md=1338316851000

The H2GO is probably one of the best cases out there for the size and what you can do with it. Great for LAN parties and such.

If I go with a manufactured case it is going to be a case labs.

However, the only one that can take a mora is the tx10 which is a $850 case.

If I go with making my own I can just do a mora and a 240 and have enough cooling that I'll not need to upgrade for a long time!

I think I'm goin to go with a horizontal layout as it would be best for cleaning the loop and least risk in damaging components.

Does anyone know how well the MoRa 3 would be if I got the 9x140 version and just used it as my only radiator for cpu and gpu?

I was starting to think that it may be worthwhile to just get it with the stand right now to watercool in my 650D as I work on a case....External rads arent my favorite thing to do but at the some time it would be the best option for me to get some cooling done immediately.

You would probably have a delta T below 5 degrees with almost any fan speed you choose.

9x140 for a CPU and GPU is about 3 times more rad than you'll need for almost and single CPU and GPU combo you can think of.* With such excess radiator area you could run undervolted fans even venturing into load territory.

*Note I haven't seen any system specs.
