YOull really be able to keep an eye on your temps easily with it in your system tray. Itll come in handy if you start stress testing as well. Coretemp, Realtemp, both work very well. What Im getting at is that without knowing what temp you were at, you dont really know that temp is what caused your PC to shutdown- its just a guess. You could literally guess that it was anything, that doesnt mean thats what caused the crash. See what you come up with after manually setting your voltages, and watch your temps.
4.0/4.2 is quite an overclock on your CPU though. Even if you had to settle at 3.5, thats still quite an increase over stock. I think temp is going to be your biggest issue. On my i7 920, I couldnt get to 4ghz with my Freezer 7 Pro, temps were just getting out of hand before making it there. Even with this H60, Im getting 71C (hyperthreading off) at 4ghz. Youve got to keep in mind you are taking a 2.66ghz CPU and trying to run it at 4ghz, thats a pretty massive OC. Temps will be quite a bit higher.

I was using core temp. I am guessing because it went up to around 100 and crashed. it's probably because of no thermal compound right? i put the bclk down to 155 so its running at about 3.1 atm until i get thermal compound on. Also how do you know if you have hyperthreading?

You installed your heatsink with no TIM and overclocked it? Yeah, that could cause some temp problems for sure.

i5s dont have hyperthreading.

I just find it to be just a little odd that you would run a PC with no thermal compound on the cooler and the cpu?doh.gif

When you opened the box to your CPU did you read the instructions? One of the most important things that you can learn here on OCN is when you are new to building a PC is to ask people what to do before you do it.I remember when I came here there was so much that I did not know and now I feel 80% that my OC'ING skills are up there. Its just something to remember that's all I was not making fun of you its just that has to be the first time I had ever heard someone do that no biggie.smile.gif

That's ok. I can see how funny it must be. I didn't build the system. Just upgraded the fan. Yes very good advice. Will ask more before doing things in the future. Would it Have damaged my cpu overheating it?

If i overclock to 3.8 (after applying thermal compound I have on order) and get a stable temperature what is the max temperature i would expect to see to be stable. Also the higher the clock does that mean the cpu won't last as long? Thanks
