server help please

Thread Starter
Hi fellas I am wanting to setup a computer to host my own game servers. I am going to use my bedroom computer for it. its always on and connected to a APC ups.

I am running my game servers on my main gaming rig right now. I have setup a static ip and have all my ports running smooth. Since i want to move all my gaming servers to the bedroom computer i will need to assign it a static ip too. i will also need to keep my gaming computers static ip for other reasons. My question is will it be possible to have two static ip's one for my bedroom computer and one for my gaming computer, on the same net ip?

i tried assigning a static ip to the bedroom computer than going to my router and opening the game server ports for that ip however it did not work. Please any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Of couse you can, just make sure they're not the same ip address.

Not sure what you mean, all you should need to do is allocate the static ip address then connect to it (unless you're connecting over the internet). please explain the issue in more detail.

Edit: I think I see your problem, you need to forward the ports that your game uses to the new ip address of the bedroom computer, you may need to restart your router after doing this so that the settings come into effect. Then to connect to it over the internet you use the external ip address of your router, not the internal ip address of the computer.

Is this a game server for yourself or public facing? If it's public facing, lets talk bandwidth.

What's your upload speed?

My upload speed is 1.40 Mbps \

they are public gaming servers, any one can connect to them

Ip's i set up so i could open ports are

gaming computer ip 192.168.2.28

bedroom computer ip 192.168.2.38

I have the game server ports opened for the gaming computer. ports are 28960,28961,28962 My servers are running fine

I tried setting the ports open for my bedroom computer 192.168.2.38. my router wont let me open the same ports for both ip's at the same time

so i deleted the gaming ports for 192.168.2.28 and added them to 192.168.2.38. I set up the one of the gaming server files on the bedroom computer but my server did not show up and i was not able to connect to it to test it

Am i going to have to set my gaming computer back to 192.168.2.1 before i can open ports for my bedroom computer?

With 1.4Mbps upload, you aren't going to host very much, if anything.

I have been able to get away with 12 man game server people connecting with pings in the low 90's.

My question is,can i have two computers with different static ips, with different ports opened for each? Both computers have the same external ip or net ip

This is what i want to do

computer 1 192.168.2.28 Ports i want to open 20500,20510,49026,20600

computer 2 192.168.2.38 Ports i want to open 28960,28961,28962

both have the same net ip 74.128.146.89

both use the same router.

I think you're a little confused with this. I'm not sure what you mean by "net ip". You can do this, your modem should have 1-1 NAT settings to allow you to route your static IP to a local IP address.

But yes, this is possible smile.gif I would look into getting a higher upload for sure though. IIRC, I once read that it is best to have 1Mbps dedicated for each player on the server.

computer 2 192.168.2.38 Ports i want to open 28960,28961,28962
both have the same net ip 74.128.146.89
both use the same router.

Maybe I can elaborate on this a little better, to help you understand. I am assuming that your net ip 74.128.146.89 is your internet IP, also know as your public IP. That IP is owned by Insight BB, which I also have...and I can tell you that Insight does not allow you to host any servers with incomming ports open. Now this is what they will tell you, and their TOS say you can't do it...so heed that warning. Anyway, let me explain how this works.

When someone hits your public IP of 74.128.146.89 with port 20500, it is normally block...since your router doesn't know what to do with it. Now if you forward port 20500 to computer 1's INTERNAL IP of 192.168.2.28, than anyone who hits your Public IP on port 20500, your router will see it and send it to Computer 1, since it has a rule to do so. Every device in your home network can have a static IP set if you want it to, as long as they are all in the same subnet, and not overlapping. You can only forward a port to 1 IP address, which is called 1-1 NAT (Network Address Translation). What you are wanting to d should work without a problem, as long as the designated ports are ONLY forward to the designated IP...and not both IPs. The reason this might not be working for you, could be a cause of your software firewall (External Antivirus program or Windows Firewall). You will need to set rules on each computer's local firewall, to open those ports as well.

Now what someone said about 1mb of upload for each external player...that's not true, at all. Each and every game has different requirements, and some use more bandwidth than others. I have a friend who hosts a private WoW server, or used to at least...which was colo. With 100 players online, each player was using, on average, 16.9kbps of the upload speed. That's less than 15mb upload for 100 people, and he had a dedicated 25x25 connection. Your upload speed is low (for a game server), and could handle a handful of people...depending on the game.

I do notice that any post about hosting a game, that is the first response "what's your upload? If it's not over 5mbps, you can't host a game server." Such a drag, since it's not true...and not everyone will be hosting game servers for hundreds of people. I used to host a diablo 2 server for me and about 10 friends several years back...on a 768k DSL connection. Starcraft server, Minecraft, private WoW servers, AA server...etc. I have done several game server host...and when it's for just a few friends, it takes less than people think.
