Custom LED confusion...

Thread Starter
First off, I want to say hello to everyone. Though I'm not exactly new to custom builds, I almost never go on to the forums, and it seems that you guys seem the most down to earth.

So now that the butt kissing is out of the way... (Just kidding. Lol) biggrin.gif

(Pre-apologies if there is a thread on this, Tapatalk doesn't seem to have a search function for threads, or I'm just not seeing it) biggrin.gif

I have been trying to come up with a plan to make my own LED strip, with more than 5 or 6 LED's. I've have done some searching around, and can't find a solid answer on how to do this exactly. All the LED calculators are saying there is not enough voltage to power a decent amount of LED's. I am not an electronics genius, but I'm not a dummy either. I know I can just buy the pre-made strips, but I'm decent at soldering, and I enjoy projects like this. So ultimately my question is: How can I make a large strip of LED's, that run off of my 12v molex connector? Thanks in advance!! biggrin.gif

Can you post a link to the LED's you're planning to use?

Sorry for not getting back right away, phone crapped out over the weekend. mad.gif What a pain.

I'd like to design a strip of LED's with roughly 8 to 12 LED's. I think :what: the problem is, all the LED's that are available from Radioshack require a lot a voltage, as well as high mA and mcd. The ones my local Radioshack carry are: FW: 5.0 mA: 30 MCD: 300. I will be using the 12 volt wire of a Molex.

I guess I don't understand why (example): a 120 mm fan can run 4 LED's, plus the fan itself, or why you can buy a strip of LED's of 15, and it won't have a problem.

Is it that the LED's being used those applications need less power, and/or are smaller, or produce less light?

Thanks again.

why you need a LED that is used in room lighning? smile.gif you just can use some of them like in thoose fans, and it would be enough, take some cold white and its gonna be enough smile.gif

well i think he wants to knows how to wire it

lets say a molex is twelve volts ok thats a molex if you wire it for twelve or 5 volts

each led needs a resistor

then run them in pararell

the leds in fans are as bright as the manufacturer makes them better leds are more expensive and most likely less prone to failure

sorry if this is a late reply but i think it was a good point to make

dont hate mate

use a resistor calculator it will tell you what resistor you need

with out a resistor they will burn out instantly
