Sub configuration - 2 12" vs 1 12"

Thread Starter
I have two Alpine 12" Type-S currently underdriven in a closed box by a 100w amp in mono. My question is, would it be better (quality/volume) to only use 1 sub and made my own ported box?

And if this helps:
Alpine mrh-t305 - EOL...and support.. and info... (nothing available from Alpine)
2 Channel Power Amplifier.
Rated 100W bridged, 50W 2 channel.
Low total Harmonic distortion (THD) at .3%.
30W x 2 4 Ohm at 14.4V
50W X 2 2 Ohm at 14.4V
100W X 1 Bridged 4 Ohm at 14.4V

Subs
12" Type S - IIRC, 4ohm dual coil
I need to get the model# off them as they aren't the same. One is newer and black and the other is silver.. both type S, though.

If it is those two subs off a 100 watt. It is better to run ONE sub with that power.

I would agree, I run my 12's off a 600 mono, haha.

Yes it is powering both on only 100w ... and it isn't too bad at it either. tongue.gif
I'll retry again (when my sleep schedule returns - working 3rds now :/ ) and make sure, but I never noticed a volume difference when one was unplugged which is what has me asking.
Thank you, both!

EDIT: Updating OP with more info...

Well, things are a bit problematic with your setup

the subs being DVC you likely have them wired to a single 4 ohm load and that running off your amp in bridged mode. Which is all fine and good, but problematic if you want to just run one sub. You can only run a DVC 4 ohm sub at 2 or 8 ohms. The amp likely won't do 2 ohms bridged, and it will be putting out far less power if you wire it as 8

All that to say...normally with your situation I would recommend just one sub in a matched vented box over both in a sealed, but you will be making sacrifices either way

Ah, I do not remember how they are wired currently, but i believe they're in parallel. I just rewired them (in-box wires as well) as whoever wired them before used something like 22Ga wire inside and in whatever combination they were in would make the amp overheat and shut off (thankfully shut off and not burst). I'd really like to make this amp work - don't really want to spend more money. rolleyes.gif

I'd really look into getting a new amp, I got a Behringer iNUKE NU1000 (1000w @ 4ohms bridged) for $200 and use it for my 15". Surely you could find it cheaper than that now.

They should be probably in series and then parallel

There is no way that you are running all voice coils in parallel or it would show to the amp as a one ohm load.

But based on your current components I would say it is not worth it to try to downgrade to one sub and a vented box. The sub will still be under driven and the volume benefit from a vented box would be offset by losing a driver and dropping wattage. You might look into selling or trading both subs for a more efficient single 4 ohm voice coil sub though, and then building a vented box for it would make sense

I think I'd rather get a new amp than subs... but I really don't want to do either. lol. I might just give making a ported box a shot and if it's not loud enough with one then I'll get another sub or amp - whatever happens to be cheapest.
I think the subs are in parallel but the vc's are in series & the end result was something between 6-8ohm. Maybe I did something wrong? tongue.gif

Is this in a car or in a home?

Either way, you don't have enough power to even drive ONE of those subs fully, let alone two. You need a new amp. Don't bother swapping to one sub, because as mentioned, you'll be at 2ohm stereo (one channel), and that one sub will still only get the same power as it would have bridged with the other sub.

So keep it the way it is now. Make sure you're not clipping the poor subs to death. And find yourself a more suitable amp. For Type S's you're going to want around 600w RMS or so (minimum) at 1ohm (assuming DVC 4ohm subs used). You could also wire to 4ohm, which again you'll still need around 600w RMS (at 4ohm). This is minimum, as the subs should take around 350-400w RMS of clean power easily enough.

EDIT:
As far as box configurations go, the Type S's really do well in a sealed enclosure. They'll do okay ported so long as its around 38Hz or so. They won't llke a really low tuned box though sadly.
