Sub configuration - 2 12" vs 1 12" - Page 2

Sadface. I knew the amp wasn't nearly powerful enough. It was cheaper and louder to carry it over from an old Kicker bass station. Can you recommend an amp? Preferably the cheapest that will do me better? Or would you suggest getting a new sub? (these ones are old and worn with slight damage). I'd much rather use a single sub and make a ported box.
They're in a car/trunk.

Your BEST bet, would be to sell what you've got on CL or something, and pick up a single Type R 12, porting it at around 32Hz or so (about 2.0-2.5 cuft), and getting an Audiopipe AP10001D or 15001D. At a 2ohm load, those amps will put out between 600-900w RMS or so, which would be perfect for the Type R. With a low tuned ported box, you'll get near sealed sound quality, but loud like a ported box.

Assuming you want something cheap of course. smile.gif

The Alpine MRP-500 is a fantastic amp if you are going to be running a single or dual 12's. They can be had for under $150 and is capable of running 2 12's if you want another down the road. Don't be fooled by its 500w RMS, it can provide more than adequate power for 2 12's plus it sounds fantastic. A friend of mine used it to power 2 12" JB subs and it stayed nice and cool while being used.

Only if you can find it used for $50-60. It's not worth $150, when the Audiopipe AP15001D is $140 brand new, and can provide 1500w RMS at 1ohm.

: / If buying a new everything is my only option I'll have to reassess it all. Long story short, speakers can't be sold which is why i'd rather make do. Does Audiopipe make good low(er) wattage amps (<300w @ 2 or 4 ohm), as well?
And, back to the orginal-i-hope-this-will-work idea; would the single 12" ported likely be louder (even at the expense of sq) than two sealed?
And I'm thinking the Alpines may not both be 4ohm dvc. One is thicker than the other iirc and has a silver cone while the other is black. : / I'll find out for sure asap.

Thank you all for all your help!

Don't know much about car audio equipment, but I have always hear that you have to be carefull with underpowering a sub as you might blow it. In my experience 2x12" subs will be louder not better than 1. Had a friend that paired his 12" with an 8" and set the crossovers so the 12 took the deep bass while the 8 pounded out the higher bass for a tighter and cleaner sound. Also depends on the quality of your subs. Would look around for a car audio expert as I wouldn't be able to help you much.

Hifonics Brutus BRZ1700.1D D-Class Mono Block 1 x 600 @ 4 OHMS, 1 x 1200 @ 2 OHMS, 1 x 1700 @ 1 OHM can be had under 200.

i know it's owned under crapsonics now but still it's not as bad. can vouch for sound (at least on a budget) is satisfactory. never heard the audiopipe amp personally but i'm sure it'll get the job done with more than enough headroom. Hell even the BRZ 1200 will do.

http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/hifonics/pdfs/HifonicsBrutusBRZAmplifierManual.pdf for the spec sheet. do keep in mind it's rated at 14.4v

http://www.audiopipe.com/support/manuals/files/APSM-1500_eng.pdf audiopipe spec sheet. it's .2% thd and s/n is >70 at an unspecified voltage. I'd personally go with the brutus (even the BRZ1200) for similar price.

Being in the scene since back in the days, leaving, then hearing the newer, cheaper manufactured stuff, I can tell you that even the cheapware has made monumental leaps in terms of better sound quality and performance. guarantee your ears will practically not be able to tell the difference (unless you're an expert).

PS avoid ebay there's been too many scams going around lately regarding amplifiers and their actual innards.

Either way, you don't have enough power to even drive ONE of those subs fully, let alone two. You need a new amp. Don't bother swapping to one sub, because as mentioned, you'll be at 2ohm stereo (one channel), and that one sub will still only get the same power as it would have bridged with the other sub.
So keep it the way it is now. Make sure you're not clipping the poor subs to death. And find yourself a more suitable amp. For Type S's you're going to want around 600w RMS or so (minimum) at 1ohm (assuming DVC 4ohm subs used). You could also wire to 4ohm, which again you'll still need around 600w RMS (at 4ohm). This is minimum, as the subs should take around 350-400w RMS of clean power easily enough.
EDIT:
As far as box configurations go, the Type S's really do well in a sealed enclosure. They'll do okay ported so long as its around 38Hz or so. They won't llke a really low tuned box though sadly.

Thank you.

Not to mention two properly driven 12's is often time's WAY to much bass for most small room's, cars, and trucks.

two 12's isn't overkill, it provides a different sound signature vs. just 1. 1 600w 12" vs 2 300w 12"'s of the same sub sounds will ultimately sound different.
