Thinking about upgrading

Thread Starter
Own the 8120 at this point. Having crossfire with this build seems counter-intuitive seeing as the RTS games I play are constantly being bottlenecked by my CPU - and I can't OC the CPU because it uses too much power.

Now, here's the question: Wut do? Do I wait for Piledriver to come out and just *HOPE* That it is good?

Or do I.. Sell my current mobo+Cpu [While it's still worth something decent] and put it towards buying an i7 Ivy bridge, or even an I7 3820

Please give me a pro/con to each option I listed, and how it will benefit me. Feel free to provide suggestions for specific parts or anything else.

P.S. Keep in mind my [****ty] PSU and that I don't really care to upgrade that. 750w.

P.S.S. I would like helpful, productive comments. Not flaming comments about how i should buy one 'just cuz'

I would wait for piledriver.

I'm planning on a cpu upgrade as well just waiting for pd to come out as it looks loads better

Higher base clock, lower power consumption and cooler running.

Also won't cost u over £400 upgrade

I see what you mean, however, I have a couple concerns:

-What if Piledriver's TDP is like 150w and I run into the same issues I did before? [Even worse, is the fact that I'd be getting {expected} Sandy Bridge performance too.]
- You're forgetting I'd be selling this rig to recoup my financial losses. Although you are very correct in that it'd be much more cost efficient to just buy PD.
- WHen is PD coming out? Because if PD doesn't come out for another [scheduled] 6 months.. What's the point of even waiting when you could wait another4 or 5 beyond that and get Haswell?

That being said, I appreciate your advice, it was awesome. But it leaves too much to the hands of speculation and hoping. Bulldozer REALLY let me down, especially when I trash talked so much in it's favor.
Only mention that so you know why I am a bit skeptical when people tell me to "Wait for PD."

I know what you mean as I keep thinking about intel as well.

The tdp has got to be less than bd as they have already said this.

Its ment to be in production now for q4 release to public so 3 / 4 months time.

Well I've got to admit that's a bit of a relief to hear. How much performance can we expect woth a PD upgrade? -- I was looking at the Trinity benchmarks and they are NOT impressive. They are reasonable, but nothing that Intel hasn't been doing for the past decade.

4Ghz over 8 cores
IPC will far improve over Bulldozer

AMD FX 8350 is an eight-core with 16MB cache, Vishera based 32nm core with 4.0GHz default clock and ability to jump to 4.2GHz with turbo core automatic overclocking.

The FX 6300 is a six-core, basically a faster iteration of the 3.8GHz clocked FX 6200 and it’s turbo will work at more than 4.1GHz. It comes with 14MB cache as the two cores are disabled at this native eight core design and we suspect that this might be the first 4GHz natively six-core ever.

The FX 4320 is a quad-core and again it replaces a Zambezi quad-core called AMD FX 4170 clocked at 4.2GHz native and 4.3GHz with turbo overclocking and it will come with 12MB cache

pinched from xd_1771.

Should overclock to 5ghz the 8350 hopefully

What RTS games are you playing, and please describe the performance problems you are having in as specific a manner as possible.

MasterFred, I like to play lots of Custom maps in Starcraft II & Starcraft II itself, I play lots of skyrim, and I play a lot of Civilization 5. {I play WoW too, but don't see performance issues there}

1. Starcraft, as soon as I hit about 300 units on screen, my FPS starts to cliff dive. I make it to about 450 before I'm utter;y reduced to about.. 5-9 FPS, Graphics settings very GPU oriented, 4xAA, 1900x1080
Shadows = OFF, lighting = low, Physics = off, Lighting = low. Shaders are set to high, because having them set on low makes the game look like a Cartoon.

Sidenote: When I overclock to about 4.4 or so, my FPS does increase, and prolongs my FPS longevity until about 520 units - Which it then reverts to horrible FPS.

2.Skrim, I can't say I get a lot of performance issues here, when I am outside in the wilderness I usually get pretty consistant, and good FPS, however the second I walk into a city.... FPSDOESA*******FACEPLANT.jpg. Seriously, I go from a constant 60 - TO about 30-35 FPS in cities, with a crossfire rig. Settings here: 1900x1080, shadows = off, 4xAA, 8x (a-something- Filtering),
It's set to Ultra settings, besides having shadows off.

3. CIvilization 5; This one is tricky. I can't for the life of me figure out why I can't get any more than... Idk.. 55 FPS consistantly? yeah, I play on max settings, but If this is a thread intensive game, and I've got a decent overclock, a CPU that scales well with higher thread count, 8 gb of 1600Mhz ram, and Xfire config.. what's the hold up? To be more specific, it ONLY goes up to about 55, but for the majority of the time I play, it hovers between 35-55 depending on which area of the map I'm looking at.

TL;DNR: Games get lower FPS until I give over a Ghz OC - Then they start showing better results..

Yeah, I thought so. SC2 is notorious for this, especially when running an AMD processor. It's heavily dependent on per-core CPU performance, while AMD tends to specialize in providing more (not as good as Intel) cores for less money. Also, graphics power is next-to-irrelevant for SC2.

The reason this is: the more units on the screen, the higher the pathing & AI calculation requirements. And SC2 is not programmed to be able to use more than 2 cores**. So for best SC2 performance, you want the fastest 2 cores possible. And no AMD processor can provide this. Piledriver won't either. It's a major pain, but there it is.

Skyrim may have a similar problem: its performance demands are far less clear, but during CPU-demanding scenarios it tends to rely on one fast core and a few other mildly-used cores.

Civ 5... actually I have no idea what causes Civ 5 to run well.

At least for SC2, you're not going to see any improved performance without switching to Intel processors (though as you noted, the overclock helps). Piledriver might provide some improvement, but you'll just get the same slowdowns at #s of units 30-50 or so higher. Actually, SC2 can slow down even Intel processors, but there you can usually power through the more demanding situations with playable frame rates, especially if you get an overclockable processor.

**In fact, the 2-core limitation is so strong, my own g850 (stock-speed basic Intel dual-core, not even an i3) actually competes with any other non-overclocked Intel CPU for StarCraft, and probably provides superior or equivalent performance to your overclocked FX-8120! For reference, I can play 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 smoothly no problem, only suffering occasional mild slowdowns in very late game 4v4 with nearly everyone having maxxed armies, even if I'm zerg going for a high-unit-count zergling/baneling army.
