I am untill today very amazed by what the current gen can do with such old hardware and so little ram. If PC would be as efficiënt as consoles it could do things that are waaaay better than what we see now in PC games.

Here is the google search for PS3 crashing BF3 I'm not going to sift through it all because its been caused by several issues including a patch they tried to implement to fix the problem.

here is the google search for Skyrim crashing Ps3

In my search for it in December and then January there was even a youtube video of a guy taking a PS3 out of the box brand new and battlefield 3 crashing it. The fact is these consoles barely can run those games much less keep them running for extended periods.

Don't get me wrong, my xbox 360 and PS3 get some good use, but they don't have the same experience as a PC. It's inferior.

Then why did you mention the PCs infinite options as a merit in your original post if they have nothing to do with gaming?

Not everyone wants to tinker and configure their PC... People want to be engaged as fast as possible and have a consistent experience. Things like consoles, Apple products, pre-built PCs(to a lesser extent), provide that sort of quality.

I've been a PC gamer for as long as I've been a console gamer and the PC will always be second fiddle in terms of gaming.

They're both quite simple if you know what you're doing, to be honest. You CAN tinker with your PC, or you can just play games.

Okay a different comment, they didn't specify the processor, but my money is on that they were using probably an i7-3960x.
A few days later they'll say next gen consoles must have better consoles because our tech-demo was using up 100% across 6 threads.

And I'm 90% inclined to the fact that they won't release FFXV which probably uses the Luminous Engine on the PC.
So buying atleast ONE of the next-gen consoles is a good move for me, I'm tired of watching youtube walkthroughs of console games just to know more about it, killing time -_-

See, this is the problem people are making by assuming they'd be PC prices... it won't be PC hardware. 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz is about £40, but the stuff they'll put in n xBox will be much more expensive and much more specialised.

proof.gif

I was under the impression they mostly use off-the-shelf parts for RAM, NAND, etc and it's only the actual motherboard PCB, the CPU and GPU and the ODD that are entirely custom. (HDD being custom for some models, but mostly normal with custom firmware for later models of Xbox)

No; the more RAM consoles have the less limited they'll be in future which means games that use our hardware harder for longer.

I'm suprised that even here on OCN,there are many users claiming console RAM is cheap...
No,that is wrong,PC CPUs don't demand too high RAM speeds and bandwith to operate properly, that's why we can put cheap DDR3 sticks in our PCs,and enjoy...
However, the same doesn't apply to consoles...

Xbox360 uses the unified GDDR5 RAM to operate,a RAM that is much faster and has larger bandwith than most DDR3 sticks. With that,it's obviously more expensive, and we probably all know that VRAM used in graphics cards like GDDR5 is significally expensive than usual RAM...

PS3 uses 256MB of specialized Rambus XDR RAM,as main system memory, and 256MB of GDDR3 as video memory(split RAM architecture). Both are faster and have higher bandwith compared to most PC's DDR3,and are also significally more expensive, especially Rambus XDR...

So in the end,no,putting 8GB of RAM into consoles is not as cheap as you think.IIRC,to match console RAM speeds and bandwith on your PC,you need to run good 2000+Mhz sticks in dual channel...

So... you're saying it'd be $55 RAM instead of $40.

GDDR isn't that expensive, you know? It wouldn't put the costs up much, or they could go back to a split memory model instead of sharing. (A console CPU does not need GDDR3 or XDR like the PS3 and 360 have, normal DDR3 at high clocks would be enough, the GPU does need this bandwidth however.)

It's nowhere nearly as expensive as you're making it out to be.

The lack of system memory on the PS3 is what really held back games like MAG which released back in 2010. MAG broke from the conventional 8v8 and 16v16 first person shooters on consoles to allow up to 256 player battles on large maps and the developer Zipper said that MAG was able to support even larger player game modes in the range of 256v256 and up. But with the limited memory resources on the PS3 it forced Zipper to have to remove certain things that was even there in the early betas as well as limited to what they could bring to the game later on. I also believe it's what had a lot to do with the PS3 freezing that started happening later on when they released a large update that added more content and maps to the game.

It's nowhere nearly as expensive as you're making it out to be.
Yeah,you're right...
I really did went a little overboard with my previous comment...
