For $14 less, he can get the OCZ ZT 750W, which is fully modular as well, and still top quality.

Or for ~30 more he can get the top notch AX650, with a 7 year warranty.

I don't know much about modern cards, but even 2 years ago the people telling you not to go Quadro are wrong. Now things may have changed and I not heard of it but there is a difference. It comes down to what programs you are running on it. After reading a bit more, I bet you would be find with a good GeForce card. No need for a Teslas or Quadros.

But the work you are doing would benefit from an i7 if you can afford it. And definitely get 16GB ram, its cheep and you will feel the difference.

The question is, do you need an SSD? That is a hard one. I am a true believer in them but it may be hard to get you one big enough to work.

Hot caching a HDD with a SSD may be worth the hassle.

Just remember there is no support from autodesk on geforce cards - and although its workable the viewport performance suffers dramatically when using Geforce (im not sure how the 6 series do in this area as i don't have one ). but i have work colleuges with 500 series and im running 400 series geforce, Both these suffer really bad from viewport performance issues - (im using Max 2012, Maya 2012 64bit at the moment and My quaddro card destroys my geforce when rendering particles realtime.

As i mentiond though im on 2012 max so things may have changed on the current version of Max

Search the autodesk forums for users of your planned card before taking the jump.

Edit just google search it - many reports of how Nvidia cripples its Geforce products in workstation apps. I cannot comment on ATI at all as i don't go near anything Red team - i think we have 1 firepro in the office but its not a very recent one - our whole production team use 4000/5000 quadros

http://forums.cgarchitect.com/69087-quadro-vs-geforce-3ds-max-2011-2012-autocad-2012-a.html discussion on just this subject, which paints a confusing picture.

Edit again - my Quaddro 4000 viewport perf 44-50 fps, with my Gtx480 7-11 fps- also scrubbing the timeline in a scene with 3 particle emitters ~ 50,000 particles reduced the redraw rate to a crawl on my GTX but the quaddro has no issues. I emplore you to research this heavily if you plan to work a lot within autodesk products.

i7 with a Quadro 4000 should be able to fit within budget, do not get a geforce card for workstation use.... even a low quadro card will perform better than a geforce card.

OP are you overclocking the system? since this is your first time building a system, I would assume not. You could get a H61/67/77 mobo instead of a Z68/77 board if you are not interested in overclocking. The only difference between H61 and H67 is Sata III, which you will only notice a slight difference when comparing SSDs. The only difference between (afaik) H61 and H77 is PCIe 3.0. You can save a good $50 by going with a H61 board.wink.gif

For a workstation PC? and his first PC? nope, that would be a bad idea.

stability > slightly faster CPU

Prime95 stable voltages + 0.015 more vcore = more stable than stock.

I use 3DSMax 2012 extensively and I have NEVER had any frame rate issues in the viewport with my geforce cards.
