my first gpu prep ... Getting ready to bench

Thread Starter
So i started prepping for an ln2 session, my first time freezing a gpu. here is what ive got done so far:

painters tape covering pot

640

armaflex insulation tape
640

LET on the back side of card
448

Front side of card still bare. thinking of using grease??
448

will the card be cold enough where i dont need mini sinks on the mem chips?
what are your recommendations for prepping the top of the card?

Looks fine so far smile.gif You can use LET on the front of the card as well.

The memory chips won't need heatsinks- the cold will spread across the PCB and if you go as low as -80, the ice will have extended as far as the memory chips smile.gif

How many layers of tape did you use. Looks a bit like one? I use multiple layers to cut down on ice. Wrap some kitchen paper upper part of the pot to catch condensation smile.gif

Grease is ok in the PCI-E slot. Some kitchen paper or a jaycloth under the pot to catch any condensation running down it might save you some problems.

Do you have a thermometer and K-probe to monitor temperatures?

Specific to G92- pull the temps down slowly, while running 3DMark wink.gif -20 and 900MHz core is a good starting point, 1.40v (idle)

Good luck and enjoy it! Take it slow

The memory will be OK without heatsinks, for the mosfets I usually use ramsinks, although quite a few benchers don't heatsink the mosfets at all while the card is frozen. With or without sinks on the mosfets, have a fan going on them.
I normally use LET on the front as well, painting it carefully from the connectors at the bracket back to the inductors, I make sure the memory chips are covered at the sides to prevent air/water from getting underneath but leave the top clear for air cooling in the future (basically everything that the stock heatsink covers, I leave clean so the stock heatsink can still be used with the LET on).
Before LET I would just use vaseline in the front, covering the memory as well since I would clean it off before putting it back to air or water. After putting on the vaseline I hit it with a blowdryer to let it melt in & spred to make sure it spreads well.
With any insulation, I also cover the pci-e tab with vaseline before plugging it into the slot to keep any moisture out of the slot.

ive used one layer of LET. im running low on LET though so if im to add a second layer and do the top of card with LET as well, ill need to go get some more from home depot.
ive got a k-type probe. ill need to remove the bracket and stick in the probe, then remount the bracket with the brobe wire running underneath bracket. I meant to do that before adding the armaflex but forgot. ill have to make do with how it is now.
can you elaborate a little more on temp regulation for 8800gt?

so maybe tape the memory chips and any SMD that the stock heatsink comes in contact with? then apply LET and remove tape after drying?

The pic you posted showing the back of the card looks ok. You'll be able to see it better than us though and you'll know if it really needs a 2nd layer smile.gif

oh.... when I said I use multiple layers of tape, I meant neoprene tape, like you used on the pot smile.gif

Temp regulation on the 8800GT- I'll say.... for your first session, stick to -60. You'll get most of your MHz from that smile.gif Keep it simple for yourself until you get the hang of it. There are a lot of nuances in GPU benching that will come with time, but ignore all that stuff for now

I don't usually tape them, I just use a finer tip paintbrush to get it up to the edges & leave the very top clean. This only really matters if you plan to put the stock cooler back on again without removing the LET.
Kenny is the man to listen to for temp & temp control, I have fun freezing gpus but still kinda amateur at it., I learned quite a bit just recently benching a 7970 for a competition

ok cool. i just applied a layer of LET to the front, using a fine brush to get the edges of the mems but still got some on the top a little. but i just wiped it off the tops with my finger and a rag.. its drying now, will take pics in a few mins and post.
As far as temp control, is there cold bug for GPUs? is trying to learn the subzero behavior of my cpu and gpu at the same time going to be too much to handle? i shouldnt have CB/CB with 3770k right? (ive only benched sandy bridge subzero, so this will also be first ivy bench..)

depends on the gpu, there can be cold bug & cold slow issues with some (cold slow is where the framerate can drop from say 100 fps to 10 fps when hitting lower temps, fermi does this but g92 shouldn't). Ivy can be buggy too although much lower temps than sandy, down around -100° you might have to up the bclk a bit to boot colder, I was booting full pot with 105 bclk.
