I installed Ubuntu without internet access? Did I set myself up for problems?

I'm just starting to learn how to use Ubuntu, and linux really.

When unbuntu first installs it recommends you be on the internet, but I couldn't get my netgear WNA3100 to work properly (I figured it out)

But after the installation, I did some software update after moving and hardwire connecting my computer to the internet, but I still can't get one single program to install from the terminal.

I can only get them to install from the software manager thing.

I even follow the instructions listed in the install folders exactly.

I make myself a super user and what not, I always get an error,

I can make directories and everything but I don't know. Should I reinstall ubuntu, while on the internet.

Becasue when I installed programs when I was running the live version it worked fine. When I was on live version, I was on my laptop and also on the internet.

Plug in your ethernet cable to a modem/router, and let Ubuntu look for proprietary software ( usually where most wireless stuff is ), then you should be able to get wireless working and set up.

I got the wireless setup, but I coulnd't install the dsnwipper or wine from my usb trough the terminal, I had to move my computer closer to my modem and instal it via the Software manager.

I was thinking I had an old kernel or something that was not downloaded when I installed Ubuntu on my hard drive.

In my limited searches, I've found a lot of problems have to do with outdated software or missing updates. So I was thinking installing withought downloading updates as I installed caused problems.

i'm on 12.4 btw

Kinda hard to say when you don't say what the error is.

why not use the software manager built into Ubuntu in order to install Wine?
did you add the correct repositories and update apt-get?
Code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.5
sudo apt-get install winetricks

12.04 is pretty current, at least compared to some distros - an old kernel isn't the issue. I'm concerned about the live vs. install environments, as trying to update or install new software under a live environment isn't going to work properly. We're going to need the text of the error to get an idea of where the problem lies.

Can I confirm that you're booting the PC without the CD in the drive?

yeah I'm using grub to dual boot.

I kind of don't want to input the command lines in again because the programs are woking properly, and I need them work diagnostics for work. I know the exact error code is needed for the most help, but I just remember the words "stop" and "operation" sorry.
