Raptors or Perpendicular?? - Page 2

I use 4 Hitachi 80Gig sata2s in Raid0 and they spank the Raptors.

2 Raptors beat 2 16mb HDDs, BUT throw in a 3rd or 4th and the Raptors lag behind.

I am using 3 WD 160 gig Sata2 16mb hdds in Raid0 and they are ok but my Hitachis beat them up in a race. And the Hitachis were $46 each...

Well I only want Perp drives and I am only getting two. I don't want 4 HDD's in my case.

I heard Perps are pretty loud , especially compare to Raptors. Is that true?? I don't want drives as loud as my 10K SCSI IBM drives right now.

I believe Raptors are pretty noisy, as far as modern hard drives go, but I've never heard anything about the noise level of the Perp drives...

nah....they might be louder then a slower rpm drive, but the noise a raptor makes it nothing to blink an eye at. I'd say case fans are louder then the raptors., IMO.

Okay, sounds good. I think I will be selling the two 74GB Raptors for two new 250GB or 320GB Seagate Perps. Of course I will be doing some RAID 0!!

The Raptors have that "10K whine" that I've noticed with my SCSI drives. I have to say going with the PRT drives is a very good choice. They are as good as the Raptors from my experience and cost a whole lot less. I have a PRT 320GB and there is almost no noise generated from it. They are not loud at all.

Wait.. you *have* the Raptors.

Only if yuo don't have enough storage space would I replace them. You likely won't see a real improvement in speed...

I'm with Choz. Unless you want the space keep the Raptors. I didn't read that last post that you owned them already. Personally, I would view this as a chance to upgrade to 640GB of RAID 0 goodness and sell those hot Raptors.
