Can somone do an experiment for me? (thermal paste) (honey + graphite + heat) - Page 2

This might be able to work, but you are mixing something extremely sticky with something conductive; that's just painful sounding.

Okay I tried it. My experiment wasn't to test conductivity, but to see if it would caramelize.

1 drop of honey and one tip of a H pencil ground up. I spread it across the heat sink as even as I could get it, but it beads up. Put it on frying pan and turn the heat up slowly.

At 7 on my stove (low, 1-9, high) it started to sizzle so I pulled the heat sink because I didn't want perm damage to it. The heat sink was almost too hot to handle so I set it aside. The mixtures on the HS was still gooey, but what was left in the pan was bubbling and drying up. I turn off the heat removed the pan and put water in it. The water immediately boiled upon hitting the pan.

  • So I know the pan was hot enough to boil the water.
  • The heat sink transferred plenty of heat.
  • The mixture remains gooey as long as temps are low.
  • It will caramelize at high temps, it there isn't anything else to transfer the heat too (ie heatsink was removed.)

I will try this again and take some pictures and temps.

This is a terrible idea. DIAMOND does conduct heat. Yes diamond is carbon. However it's not even close to the carbon you get when you burn something. Compress that with about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 PSI for a few million years and then it'll transfer heat.
And before that you have to actually get it to caramelize, it's not going to do it at 40C. In fact unless you turn P95 on the instant you get the heatsink on, then stop the fan so the CPU can get dangerously hot it won't caramelize, it'll just run out and get all over your video card or whatever.

We can synthetically make diamond, not large chunks, but we do it. That's the dust they use in diamond coated/"tipped" tools and such.

As for honey.... That sounds interesting, at least it would smell good.

Umm... this is graphite; graphite has high heat conductivity across the planes of hexagonally bonded carbon.

Also, you don't get pure carbon when you burn something; combustion turns something into usually CO2 and H2O.

Hey I found this: http://www.graftechaet.com/CMSPages/GetFile.aspx?guid=94ab371b-d460-433a-8817-593bcc3eedfc

It might be helpful to answer the OP's question.

Synthetic diamond is nothing at all like the stuff you put on your ring. It's about equivalent to a "black diamond" which are almost worthless. You also need several pounds of explosives to make like 1/4 carat.

They did it on Mythbusters once. They ended up with a few tiny diamonds after detonating a very large amount of high explosive.
