Can somone do an experiment for me? (thermal paste) (honey + graphite + heat) - Page 8

so has anyone actually tried the honey yet? i think it would be pretty cool seeing honey being used as TIM. my father has 4 bee hives, and gets pounds and pounds of honey each harvest, but i have never thought of using it for anything other than consumption.

I tested it on the stove. The problem with honey is that it is water based and when you heat it, it gets thinner (runnier) until its hot enough to crystallize. But you should see temps high enough to crystallize the honey unless you have already fried your CPU. However, it will get runny and if your motherboard is vertical like most are, the it is going to run out. Hopefully the graphite would hold it all together, but I think that I want to look for a different bonding agent for the graphite so I don't short circuit my board. Maybe I should look for another testing MB that is AM2 socket and build a testing rig.thinking.gif

LOL...I'm at a loss.

Maybe some jam instead of honey. Use some toast as the binder. That way when the crap gets all over your hardware you still have the rest of the jam and toast to eat while you contemplate some other stuff that's sitting around to use as tim. Maybe some carbonized salad dressing. Ranch would probably be best. Too many chunks in blue cheese. rolleyes.gif

intel should make the metal cover on cpus out of graphite

http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/electronic-components/protection/pyrolytic-graphite-sheet.aspx if anyone wants to try some graphene sheets 25micron thich, yeah its conductive as hell but conducts heat pretty well its a bit pricy too around 3-50bucks for a sheet of it would be better then any diy solution

Yeap...^ This....Intend using this stuff as a high performance heat spreader in a submersion build.

interesting, but what's the Z-axis thermal conductivity?

Yes, that was my concern also, its not really meant to be a tim to pass heat through the planes on the Z axis, but makes a fantastic heat spreader in the lateral directions.
Having said that at only 25 microns thick it's thermal resistance in the z axis would I imagine be low.

must be pretty low considering its thickness and high in plane thermal conductivity, i bet it will be few times more then the most effective paste

You'd still have to lap and polish your heatsink to less than 1/1000 of an inch of flat. (assuming it's going on a de-lidded cpu)
