System overhaul advise - Page 2

Were I building a new system I would NOT go single core. An Opteron 165/x-2 3800+ is the only worthwhile AMD way to go at your price.

Most of the problems I've read come from it not being able to deliver enough volts to the RAM but that was a while ago and I imagine they would have released an updated BIOS

You could spend a little bit more and get this

MSI K9N Platinum $100 ($90 with MIR)

Just for kicks... an Intel rig Can be upgraded to Core 2 Duo if you so desire

MoBo: GigaByte GA-965P-S3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express $115.99
CPU: Intel Pentium D 915 Presler 2.8GHz LGA 775 $119.99
RAM: G.SKILL 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) $124.99
Video: 3D Fuzion 3DFR76256GSE GeForce 7600GS 256MB GDDR2 $88.88
PSU: FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX450-PN, 12cm FAN 450W $48.99

Total: $498.84

If you can afford another $60, you can replace the CPU with an E6300.

I was thinking about using the build Boredom recomended with one exception. I was looking to replace the CPU.

CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103747

that brings costs to $601 and I remembered that since my tower is a micro, I'll have to replace it as well. Hmmm...I'm going to look around at some motherboard/CPU combos and see if i can find a package for a bit cheaper...or look at the Intel builds *hangs head in shame* LOL

If you're looking at spending $182 on a processor you might as well go Allendale

Agreed with Boredom. Check my Inter rig. Just pop the Allendale in there; total will be $560 + shipping.

I think i just may do that
I figured that i would end up going over budeget a little, so I'm still in good shape. Good thing I put back more than I thought I would need. This looks like a pretty strong build so far. I'll recycle my old DVD +/- RW and some other small things from my current rig and I should be good to go. Of course I'm always open to more opinions. I have a hard time making up my mind...but dont we all I guess.

It's amazing how quickly an AMD build switches to an Intel build.

I dont think the mobo and ram are compatable. The ram rans at 4-4-4 and 2.0 - 2.1v and the mobo supports Only DDR2-800 memory supporting JEDEC approved 1.8V operation with timings of 5-5-5 or 6-6-6 is supported on Intel Desktop Boards based on Intel 965 Express Chipsets.

Ignore it, JEDEC standards are meaningless to everyone but the manufacturers
