[StopTheCap] AT&T Cracking Down on DSL/U-verse Usage While Promoting “No Bandwidth Limitations”

Stop the Cap! has suddenly started receiving a larger number of complaints about AT&T’s Internet Overcharging scheme in the past two weeks, indicating to us the company has started cracking down more forcefully on usage cap “violators.”

Those who purchased AT&T U-verse in an effort to avoid usage caps from their local cable company are particularly upset, because the phone company still markets its U-verse service as being ‘bandwidth-limit-free.’

“We don’t limit your bandwidth to a particular amount,” promises AT&T in prominent language on its website. The fine print says something very different — AT&T limits the amount of usage customers get before being exposed to overlimit fees — 150GB for DSL, 250GB for U-verse. It is part of what the company calls wired “data plans.”...

DSL has had the 150GB enforced for a while now. U-Verse on the other hand, the IP over TV usage can't be distinguished from normal internet usage (AT&T being lazy and not upgrading sytems), so the 250GB cap isn't enforced (I would know, I have U-Verse, and I've used 3TB this month and nothing).

Once I get that 250GB email, Time Warner Cable (50/5, and pretty reliable in my area) here I come!

I think it is a hit or miss for some people....I have their slow DSL. My family watches our online show and I torrent stuff. I'm pretty sure I exceed the 150GB cap every month but I get no warnings or charges. Their customer service is bad but they're pretty easy to convince if you're willing to cancel their service. I have to resort to that even though AT&T is the only company in my area.

Their customer service is hit and miss I guess too, since whenever I call, they are EXTREMELY friendly.

Last time I called, I said our service was too expensive, and I got a $60 discount on TV and Internet (went from $140 to $80), so I consider that a pretty hefty price drop.

I wouldn't trust that TWC wont go the way of usage caps. They are trying to impliment them, but are laying low from the last PR disaster in Rochester.

I use at&t for wireless, i don't mind my 2gb data cap since I've never gone over it and its a cell phone i dont spend all day using it. However if timewarner thinks they can ever limit my usage like this U-verse shenanigans they are mistaken. Seeing how Im not afraid to go outside i wouldn't have much of a problem at all cancelling my ISP. I already got rid of their horrid cable service for dish network. I save a tremendous amount of green and my channels aren't constantly buffering or getting pixelated. The fact that they are limiting a wired service is ridiculous.

I have their slow DSL, too. I hardly get even close to the 150GB cap because it's so friggen slow to download. DSL Speedtest says my connection is slower than 77% of the country, and it costs $36/month. It's the only viable option right now, but I'm history as soon as something better comes along.
