Anyway, if you want to believe that comparison, go ahead, but its misleading. So they share some of the same hardware, that's a fact, but its not identical. The Macbook is built better, arguably comes with better software pre-packaged into the OS, is backed up by far better customer support than most other competing companies and has an OS that is easier to use than Windows for people who do not use their computer for hours on end every day.
Also, a Mac user is far less likely to get malware/viruses than if they were using a computer running Windows. Yeah, its due to the market share, but you can't discount that as a selling point as well. They do look much better than your average Windows laptop as well, maybe not to you for whatever reason, but I'd imagine the general public thinks so.
The problem here is people on this site are either too stupid or just choose not to look at the bigger picture. There's more to a pre built machine than the hardware inside.

even if that comparison is false, go to sager's website and build something for the same price as a $1400 mac, and see how much better of a laptop you get

you say built better, how does that even make sense. is it more durable so you can drop it more ? are there better quality parts? are the plastic clips made from some space age plastic that never break? your vague use of the word better is feeding the stereotype

better OS is highly subject to one’s personal preferences, as i cant stand using Mac OS's. personal preference yes, but still true none the less.

Far better customer service? you mean those clowns at the genius bar? LOL is all i have for that

Again, the virus/malware thing. I’'ve had my dell for 5 years, with malwarebytes alone, and i have never had a virus. if your mac is mainly for downloading illegal music and watching tons of pr0n, yea maybe it’s a better bet

Look much better? Again, subjective. Im not saying I don’t like the style, but I equally enjoy the looks of most of the ultrabooks and thin laptops on the market. They don’t have a shiny apple, guess that’s worth hundreds of dollars to mac fans

More to a prebuilt machine? Like that? Again very vague and useless. And again, dell/asus/sager/etc do not have bad build qualities, make a better argument.

Finally, the dumbest comment you made, too stupid to look at the bigger picture. Where do I begin. Apparently spending twice the $ on a laptop is looking at the bigger picture. I definitely have nothing better to do with ~$800 in my life, aside from getting a trendy laptop. Oh wait… I do. You are basically referring to people as stupid for not buying a mac. You are the epitome of a fan boy, with terrible debating skills, go make a solid argument as to why macs are better and come back then

Microcomputers. That is the industry term for the form factor.

Or maybe its a Home computer.

PC is associated with IBM compatible (IBM PC released in 1981). Apple claims mac to be the un-PC.

Apple integrates their drivers thoroughly, that's why you need to purchase their hardware, because of this they charge premiums, but also because of this... their OS runs damn smooth. Linux and Windows accommodate a large list of hardware and do it well, while mac handles a handful and do it very well... Aside from that, not really. That being said, Love my iPhone and love my windows.

Here is the comparison I make and it seems to make sense to some people.

Mac's are like Harley's

There are cheaper, faster, more powerful, and arguably cooler motorcycles out there but there not Harley's. Harley's are either your thing or not there really is no middle ground. You can argue all day long about BMW this, Duc that and it won't change a thing. Harley people are Harley people

Mac's share every piece of equipment with their wintel counter parts, you can find wintel box's cheaper, faster, more powerful, and arguably cooler but there not Mac's. Mac's are either your thing or not, all the arguments about price and specifications won't change a thing. Mac people are Mac people.

- I often don't even need the Applications Folder since my frequently used things are in the dock.
- More programs need installation due to a unified registry then .App programs do. A .App file is like an executable folder and often uses config files inside the .app rather then depend on a system registry. When an app does need to be installed, you usually just dump it in the Applications Folder.
- Integration with my phone is easier (I'm an iPhone user. I care more about the OS then the hardware, and I like iOS over Android).
- You rarely, if ever, need to bother with drivers. Heck, the Xbox 360 Kinect is FAR easier to setup in OS X then in Windows.
- You rarely, if ever, need to clean a registry (because there isn't one) or clean up startup programs.
- The multitouch gesture integration makes laptop use far more efficient.
- I'v had less issues connecting to and selecting wifi networks in OS X then in Windows.
These little things add up in the use experience. Sure, some of these may have third party equivalents, like the dock, but I specifically don't want to mess with stuff like that on a laptop. I want it ready to go out of the box or after a reinstall of the OS. Less tweaking means I can toss my apps and files on an external drive, reformat, and quickly be back where I was without installing anything. Others, like Windows more complex folder hierarchy or unified registry, are inherent of the OS. When messing with this stuff on a track pad, it can get frustrating quick. Doubly so if the trackpad is small and offset like so many are, and like I'v said before, a laptop should not be dependent on external devices.

My point was that they're both easy to use.

If I learned to be proficient with Linux after years of Windows use then I can do the same with Macs.
The problem isn't familiarity - it's design. Macs come off as contrary just for the sake of not being like Windows. That menubar is an abomination and completely unproductive. Please explain to me why it makes sense to go way to the top of the screen for everything instead of a quick movement to the top of the window I'm using. How long did it take them to get rid of that ridiculous one button mouse?
There was a time when the built in apps gave Macs an advantage, but with the autorun and file association improvements made in XP and then Windows 7 that advantage is all but gone. Windows is far from perfect but my God.. I'm not going to use over-priced unintuitive crap just because it's not Windows. Macs ar a side-grade AT best - with a much heftier price tag.

My thoughts exactly. I go from my girlfriends Mac to my cheap Dell laptop that my work gave me. The only thing better about the mac is the touchpad. The OS navigation is hell to use. The cheap Dell laptop given to me by my job is also much faster, has more features, and probably costs ~$1000 less.

Now a comparable price range would be my desktop PC to the Mac. I get a nice fancy mouse, fancy keyboard, i5 2500k, GTX 670, 8gb of ram, a professional mobo, 2 SSD's, 2 mechanical drives, 1 a Velociraptor, 3 monitors, a water cooling loop with 2 rads, and a nice gaming headset for roughly what it costs to buy her macbook

Ah I see. If you're using software to control the fan speeds it could be why it's getting as high as 1700 RPM. Would the name of the app be smcFanControl?

Any reason in particular why you're trying to keep them lower? They get hot, but they're still very well within operating temperatures.

It is smcFanControl, just checked. All I'm setting is the minimum speed, which keeps the temps down by about 5-10C, but it shouldn't affect the maximum speeds.
