When I built my first PC in 2009, I was incredibly paranoid. I would not touch ANYTHING without using that little yellow antistatic wrist watch - and it was a PITA because it was too small doh.gif in the last 1-2 years, I stopped using it and totally forgot about grounding myself, since then, I've built another computer, moved the contents from one computer to another, switched GPUs 3 times (plus reinstallation multiple times), cleaned a computer from scratch (took EVERYTHING out), remounted my cooler several times... and I haven't had ANY problems.

How about you? Does anyone here follow antistatic procedures? smile.gif

(edit: I posted in this subforum because I assume the one component that people reinstall/remove most frequently is a GPU)

In general I try to ground myself on concrete and touch the metal housing of a case before doing much, but sometimes I don't and just go at things while standing barefoot on carpet. redface.gif

Probably not the best or professional method but hey - whatever. tongue.gif

I've never used the wrist-straps though but I have previously used grounding mats.

I have hardwood floors in my house.. you will not find a square inch of carpet thumb.gif That's a pretty good antistatic precaution I assume.

I also used to use those anti static wrist things. I stopped using them because they're such a hassle but I usually touch the metal parts on my case while its still plugged in to ground myself before I work on it

Absolutely, I use a four stage anti-grounding technique before working inside any rig.

1. Grab and hold a metal/brass doorknob or deadbolt. I make sure to do it at least 3-5 times depending on the material.
2. Rub a metal shower head. Since it's grounded to the earth, I only touch it twice.
3. Wear as few clothes as possible to avoid static shock damage.
4. Turn on the PC, let the PSU get fully charged, then turn it off and touch only the OUTSIDE BOTTOM housing.

Works perfectly.

I really don't see the need to have a wristband or whatever. Just touch the metal part of the case and your good to go.

I have never had a problem with just touching the metal part of the case.

I don't see how some static electricity could even do anything anyway. Maybe theoretically it could, but realistically I highly doubt not wearing a anti-static wristband can cause any problems.

I would really like to see static electricity from a person affect any part of a computer. I haven't seen any article or video of anyone ruining a computer part because of a tiny shock of static electricity.
