AMD FX-8120 overclocking help

Thread Starter
I'm new here and quite new to overclocking, but have a bit of understanding from guides I have been following.

I'm having problem to let my FX-8120 go higher than 4,14 ghz at 1,45 vcore volt. It seems as there are a lot of people running higher with lower voltage usage, so I'm afraid if I have done anything wrong or my mainboard is the reason. Heard about a few having similar problems with same mainboard.

BIOS settings:

CPU clock: x18 [4140 mhz]
Turbo: disabled
NB: x10 [2300 mhz]
CPU Host: 230
HT Link: x11 (2530 mhz)
Memory: 8GB dual channel 9-10-9-27: running x8 (1840 mhz)

All voltages at default expect vcore 1,45v

Hardwares:
- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev 1.0) updated to lastest bios
- AMD FX-8120 (4,14ghz)
- 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1866 mhz
- NZXT HALE 90 850W 80+ gold

I really need to bump my FX-8120 a bit more to run a few apps perfectely such as pcsx2 emulator which can be insanely cpu consuming. Unfortunately FX-8120 is not that good at these stuff.

Thanks in advance!

How are you stress testing your CPU? Are you using Prime95? The max safe 24/7 voltage on air is 1.5V. What's your vdroop?

I tried Prime95 for about 1-2 hours, with my current clocks it seemed okay during the stress test. 4 days since I applied these settings and didn't got any crash while I'm doing a lot of stuff, so I hope it will last.

I think lowest volts I have seen is about 1,37 (maybe 1,35 in rare occurrences) and highest 1.42. I might should go for 1,47 but didn't experience any problem with 1,45 with my current settings. Can I do something for vdroop? Unfortunately I don't have LLC in my bios.

If you don't have LLC then there's nothing you can do about vdroop besides raising the voltage. I know, I used to have that same problem when I have Phenom II x4 970. 1-2 hours of prime is too short. You should prime for at least 10 hours without any errors. But use Intel Burn Test for quick stability test before priming. Remember IBT runs hotter than prime. You can keep pushing voltage until 1.5V as long you keep temps under 55C.

I see, thank you. If raising voltage is the case, do you think it's worth if I give Asus CROSSHAIR V FORMULA 990FX a try for higher clocks?
That's pretty expensive motherboard. Do you really want to buy another motherboard, so you can overclock little higher? I would stick to your motherboard unless you have another problems with it.

Well, I will consider if I'll go with my setup until Intel. Thanks for the help!

Your biggest problem is probably that you started out overclocking with the bus instead of the multiplier. If I were you, I would start again except adjust only the multiplier on the CPU. You should be able to hit 4.2-4.3GHz with that voltage.

Yeah I began first with the cpu multiplier and came far as 4,2 ghz (i think) passing prime95. It seems as my mainboard or cpu doesn't like higher than around 4ghz and 1,45 voltage. I'm just not sure if its due to my mainboard, or BIOS with no LLC option, or other reason.

I prefer to lower the multiplier and more bus speed, because I get more performance from it.
