Lots of clients... what to use?

post #1 of 25
Thread Starter
Ok so I have several rigs with different clients. I'd like some verification that I'm doing thing "right".

Main Rig:
OS: Windows 7
CPU: 2600K @ 4.6GHz
GPU 2x GTX 560 Ti
Folding Client: V7 Beta Client

Wife's Rig:
OS: Windows Vista
GPU: GTX 560 Ti
Folding Client: V7 Beta Client

WHS Rig:
OS: Windows Home Server
CPU: i7 950 @ 4.4 GHz
GPU: GTX 460
Folding Client: GPU Tracker V2

Folding Rig:
OS: Windows 7
CPU: FX-8120 (No OC yet)
GPU: 4x GTX 460
Folding Client: Unsure

Now my Main rig and my Wife's rig runs fine. I get decent PPD but is there a better client for them?

The WHS rig has a really really low PPD readout. 4K PPD for each and I know each of them can do more. Whats wrong?

What client should I use in the folding rig? The others? Is there one client I can put on my main rig to track all the others?

Before you answer, please know I like to have a GUI. Makes life easy when managing all these rigs. I read throught the sticky on using HFM but I'm not sure of that.

Thanks for the help!

Main Rig:
OS: Windows 7
CPU: 2600K @ 4.6GHz
GPU 2x GTX 560 Ti

Ubuntu 10.10 VM with corehack for the CPU and v7 beta client for the GPU's.

Wife's Rig:
OS: Windows Vista
GPU: GTX 560 Ti

v7 beta client for the GPU.

WHS Rig:
OS: Windows Home Server
CPU: i7 950 @ 4.4 GHz
GPU: GTX 460

v7 beta client for the CPU and GPU.

Folding Rig:
OS: Windows 7
CPU: FX-8120 (No OC yet)
GPU: 4x GTX 460

Ubuntu 10.10 VM for the CPU and v7 beta client for the GPU's.  You could add the corehack for the VM only if you want to overclock over 4.6 GHz.

HFM is pretty simple to set up and I would probably recommend setting it up on the WHS rig.  I believe there is a way that you can leverage WHS's existing web server as well to display your stats.

The clients I listed are the best balance between max PPD and usability.  The GPU clients don't really differ all that much, but CPU folding makes very noticeable difference.

I've been using vmware.

you'll need version 3.0, I think thats the only one that lets you make use of all the cores of you cpu with just a config edit, otherwise it'll be locked to 4 cores.

you should be pumpin out some really good ppd with all those rigs once you're all setup

Any guides? I have no idea how to do this "CPU hack"

I started V8 download before I left for work this morning but seems like that was a waste...

Well if it requires something extra than yes. I've only ever used VMware to build a network for school or at work.

this is just a quick how to, kinda sort of guide, and alot can be changed to fit the needs of your rig, just takes more detail than I can stay awake to type up

using vmware 3.0

create virtual machine using ubuntu 10.10, customize your hardware (i only adjusted ram). once created, use a text editor like notetab lite and open up the vm config file located in documents file "virtual machines"
you should see something that kinda looks like this:
Code:
.encoding = "windows-1252"
config.version = "8"
virtualHW.version = "7"
vcpu.hotadd = "TRUE"
maxvcpus = "6"
numvcpu = "6"
scsi0.present = "TRUE"
scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
memsize = "2048"

you'll want to change line maxvcpus and numvcpu number to the amount of cores your cpu has, 2600k is going to be 8 for instance. (make sure to keep the quotations!). save file and go ahead and start setting up ubuntu as done in the thread I linked earlier. here

Awesome thanks man. I'll give it a shot when I get home from work and download the older version.
