Getting a New Video Card for My Birthday...Here We Go Again...

Thread Starter
UPDATE: Went with the 7870 OC from Gigabyte :thumb.gif Thanks for all the help though guys!

Well, I thought I definitely made my decision for what GPU I want for my birthday, which was going to be the ASUS DirecCUII HD7850...
But... unfortunately (because it stresses me out mad.gif lol), I have found more GPU competitors. Here we go again... doh.gif

So the GPUs I have in mind right now are these: ASUS HD7850 (Mentioned above), Sapphire HD7850 (Heard it's "better" than ASUS), EVGA GTX 480 (Yes, the power hungry, desert temps. GPU), and, yes, even this one, a GTX 295 (Probably from EVGA as well, keep in mind, this card will probably get eliminated easily. However, it is only on here because of it's potential to still run the latest games like BF3)

Here's what I want from my brand new GPU: To max out, or AT LEAST almost max out (because I understand these cards won't do full AA and/or AF settings, 'least research tells me), Battlefield 3 (getting this for my birthday as well) and all other games like Skyrim, Crysis (all of them), GTA IV... and pretty much the brand new game titles coming up soon (basically I want my GPU to be "future ready")

I also want to OC my GPU. I understand both the ASUS and Sapphire 7850's will get the job done WITHOUT having to buy a third party heatsink like the 480 and 295 (which would cost around $30 - 60 bucks), in which I don't want to have to buy more stuff just so I can OC the nVidia cards.

Now, for something very unusual and random... the temps... of my room! Lol rolleyes.gif Seriously, my room is a freakin' desert when my computer is turned on. I think if I get the GTX 480, with all that heat and power hungriness it has, it would make my room from desert temps, to hell temps, lol. So, in all seriousness, I don't want to have a hotter room than I already have (thank God for AC's thumb.gif )

So that's all the cards I have in mind right now, and HOPEFULLY I don't have to stress out about any other cards being this-or-that tongue.gif . By the way, my birthday is in 10 days so yeah... short time span, really.

Overview of what I want from my new GPU:
- Max out BF3 (or almost max out) and be future ready for other games coming out.

- Nice OCs

- Runs cool and not make my room temps like hell.

Also, one more thing, my budget is around $200 - 280 bucks. So no recommending other cards that are over $290 bucks.

Please help and thank you!

P.S. THE DRIVERS!!! I have heard that the 7850's drivers are doing pretty bad and are being unstable, while the nVidia drivers are rock solid and have no problems what-so-ever (I've never had any problems with nVidia drivers, so I don't wanna start having driver problems with ATI/AMD drivers.)

Well... happy birthday in advance smile.gif

The amd and nvidia drivers war/discussion is almost a myth these days, nvidia drivers have problems as well its' just different from game to game.. although i'd go nvidia but most of amd cards guyz saying amd cards are cheap/oc very well & can max out BF3.

GTX295 won't run BF3 in dx11 which makes no sense at all since you need to enjoy your birthday gift tongue.gif

GTX480 won't max out BF3 and will add heat to your room after 1 hour of playing BF3.

I would go for amd 7850 "considering the cards you're thinking about".

AMD drivers are fine.

The GTX480 would probably be the cards to get if your looking for cheap fast performance. They also have great OC value. If you are looking to get a nvidia card that is the card I would pick. Has 1.5gb of RAM so thats a nice plus, most of those cheaper nvidia cards only have 1gb. 7850 would be the second best option, they use lot less power for about the same amount of performance. With a OC the gtx480 will be the faster card. Though your gonna want a better cooler for the GTX480 for any crazy overclocking. Though you could pick up a antec h2o 620 for 50 bucks and mod it onto the 480. Would make it run nice and cool, and with a bios mod you may be able to push the core to 900mhz. At that speed your going faster then a GTX580.

Don't worry to much about heat, I run 2 470's and get by with moderate AC. Though even here lower WI it is still 80-100f almost every day and on the 3rd floor it gets pretty hot. For me my pc is dead silent, but back when I was running on AIR just to run on 800core then fans on the cards would climb to 100% and get vary loud.

the 400 series are great for modding and having some great fun. 7850 would be great if your looking for a nice power efficient card and low amount of heat output. I would still go for the 480 if your looking to play games as fast as they can be played on your budget.

Replying to Faisal:

Thanks smile.gif

And is that right? Well I wasn't really too concerned about the driver issues, but I was just worried. And I thought I heard/saw somewhere that the ATI drivers had trouble with BF3, so that was my biggest concern.

Thats especially true for the 275: doesn't have DX11, and me playing BF3 with DX10 would not make sense at all, lol. tongue.gif Especially how I said I want my GPU to be future ready for future games so yeah... Pretty much the 275 is out and done already in my list xD no point going to it.

As for the 480, I heard about it not maxing out, I heard it does and so on. But personally, I actually don't think it does. As for the temps, that's definitely true. BF3 is a graphic hungry game, and the 480 combined with BF3 would definitely mean hot temps, which means my
room turning into hell temps tongue.gif

Thanks for your reply! Anyone else can still help smile.gif

EDIT: I will check replies tomorrow. Using an iPhone trying to type and read posts isn't easy at all. And it's 2:30 A.M.

HD 7850 would be the best option. it overclocks very well. At 1 Ghz you get GTX 480 / GTX 570 performance. At 1.2 Ghz you are in GTX 580 perf range.

here is a Powercolor HD 7850 (1 ghz) review

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/9.html
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/31.html

You can clearly see that HD 7850 (1 Ghz) gives you GTX 570 perf and at 1.2+ Ghz you are close to GTX 580 perf.

Here is the MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr (900 Mhz) for USD 210 after rebate.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127663

And this card will give you all this performance for half the power draw of GTX 480 and will run much cooler and quieter. The latest 12.6 WHQL drivers are good. thumb.gif

gtx 480 easy. i hate when people say they get hot and all that crap... if your case has sufficient cooling then you are fine. i have 2 480's and i can max out bf3 easy peasy lemon squeezy. even with 1 i could run it with all ultra settings with ssao and no aa and stay above 60fps at 1080p. i got new zalman vf3000f coolers and i oc'd them to 870mhz on the core and tested them against my mates dual stock (792mhz) asus dcII gtx 580's on bf3 and i got the exact same fps if not more.

I'd probably get a 7850, once overclocked it'll perform about the same as an overclocked 480 and you won't have all that heat dumped in your room.
The 480 would probably perform better if you got a good overclocker but the 4*0 cards are very hit and miss when it comes to overclocking, I've heard of people hitting 1000MHz Core and others who say they're stuck at 750 or less.
The 7850 is a safer bet.

Edit: If room temps are a concern I'd stay away from the 480, my room is more than noticeably warmer than the rest of the house with my 470s in SLI even if I'm not playing very intensive games.

the stock cooler does get loud. and the load temps do hit 90c.

You have invested in a custom cooler. so obviously your temps must be better and noise would not be an issue.

The XFX coolers are not so great. I have heard lots of XFX HD 7950 DD users complain about high temps when overclocking.

If the OP wants a HD 7870 he should get the MSI HD 7870 Twin Frozr for USD 280 after rebate.

Personally the MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr for USD 210 after rebate has the best price perf. Clock for clock the HD 7870 is less than 10% faster when compared to HD 7850. But the cost difference in this case is more than 30%.

Hmm good point, Perhaps the first thing i have ever agreed with you on thumb.gif
