Getting a New Video Card for My Birthday...Here We Go Again... - Page 2

+1 7870 ghz edition or twin frozr model. Epic cards, overclock like mad. If they happen to release before you're ready to buy and you can actually find one, the Gtx 660/660ti would be worth a look as well. But the way kepler looks, I wouldn't count on it. I'm speaking in terms of availability. Maybe a used 3gb 580 also. Those would be my picks.

Hey everyone! I know I said I'd reply tomorrow (which I still am, but with more detail and all), but I saw all these posts and just had to read them. So Apparently the Twin Frozors is the way I should go? (I actually was thinking about getting those, but they were out of stock at the time)

As for the 7850 vs. 7870, yeah I'd definitely go with the 7850, due to the major price difference and besides, like one of you said, it's only less than a 10% difference with 7850 vs. 7870

I too would recommend the MSI Twin Frozr for whatever card you buy. Another card you might want to consider is the GTX570. Prices for them are dropping to make room for the GTX660.
Makes me happy!

You have invested in a custom cooler. so obviously your temps must be better and noise would not be an issue.

i didnt always have the custom coolers...my cards never hit 90c with stock coolers maybe 75-80 max ive ever seen it. and if u have your computer under your desk than the noise is not an issue, even if its ontop beside you, you will barely notice it when gaming.

The amd and nvidia drivers war/discussion is almost a myth these days, nvidia drivers have problems as well its' just different from game to game.. although i'd go nvidia but most of amd cards guyz saying amd cards are cheap/oc very well & can max out BF3.
GTX295 won't run BF3 in dx11 which makes no sense at all since you need to enjoy your birthday gift tongue.gif
GTX480 won't max out BF3 and will add heat to your room after 1 hour of playing BF3.
I would go for amd 7850 "considering the cards you're thinking about".

What? .....What???

I had a GTX480 prior to my GTX670 and it ran BF3 @ 1920x1080 with everything at Ultra, HBAO 4x AA and 8x AF completely fine, lowest FPS I'd see was 45fps.

I then got an aftermarket cooler (Thermalright Shaman) and I OC'ed it to 900Mhz on the core and 2100Mhz on the memory (4.2Ghz effective). With the Shaman the highest temp I ever saw at these speeds was 64c (on the stock cooler the highest temp I ever reached was 83c and that was with a modest fan curve, if you can tolerate more noise it'll run even cooler, though its rated for 105c). And It was 10-15% faster than a stock GTX580.

The GTX480 is an amazing card.

The choice here is pretty damn obvious.

I agree, I used to own the gigabyte 480 super overclock before my 670 and it was a beast, Only reason i recommend otherwise is power consumption and heat, Although heat is not an issue with a non ref 480

Ok hello again everyone!

So after reading all the replies and looking at the prices and performance, the whole "showdown" is this: GTX 480 vs. MSI TwinFrozr2 HD7850 vs. GTX 570. Practically no one has mentioned the ASUS HD7850 tongue.gif lol, I thought someone would, but apparently not.

Someone actually PM'ed me about selling a GTX 580 for $280. Only about 5 weeks old and he got it from newegg. I'm considering that deal as well, but there are two problems: 1. If the video card ever dies... who would I go to? I don't want to risk getting something used and then it dying on me and now I'm back to the old GTX 275. 2. I'm not really the type that deals on here (Overclock.net), so I don't understand how this whole offer thing would work... tongue.gif

And apparently (by using HWCompare), the 580 is better than the 7850 and the GTX 480. Then again, there's the GTX 570 for $250 on Newegg (In total would be $275) and it's the MSI TwinFrozr 2 one as well.

I know the obvious choice would be the 580.. but I'm still looking at other decisions I could make (Meaning getting the GPU brand new and fresh and not having to worry about it dying, as it would have warranty).

well, anything of electronics will or might die on you anytime, even if it was perfect the last day. its all about chance. so imo go for the 580. if not, 570 when stock is nearly the same as a 480 and when oc'ed probably as good as a 580. i would first try the 580, but if you don't want used stuff, go for a 570 and oc it like hell and live along thumb.gif
