Sorry, I've only heard them powered by my g/f's Nuforce Icon, haven't heard them without an amp. If I remember, I'll give it a whirl without an amp next time I'm there.

The 700s do not require an amp and many say they gain no benefit. My sound card has one and I have no complaints. Many people say they have no bass but I don't have a problem with that at all, dubstep and hard house sound so rich and vibrant. Don't know about the 900s. I would recomend it. OH! They are COMFY!!!!!!!! They will feel odd and like they are falling off at first but trust me their not. Keep wearing them, you get used to it. No pressure on your head or ears at all and I sometimes forget they are on. I had no discomfort wearing them for my flight from US to UK the entire ride.

I also did some research but can't find my answer, I've ordered my soundcard (Asus Xonar Essence STX) but can't seem to find If i'll need an amp to run these 900x's...

Sorry thought I mentioned it, they do not REQUIRE an amp. Honestly I would use an amp, wether built into the sound card or external.
