Dual CPU for gaming dead?

Thread Starter
Brief search only showed me server board with dual sockets. Are the days of gaming on a dual CPU system over? Was just curious if there would be any advantage and if it was possible anymore. The thought is cool, but having the feeling it is a thing of the past. Planning on doing 1920x1080 gaming, 60+ fps recording, possible dual monitor (second monitor to display fraps, skype, web, etc), video editing and rendering.

Pointless. A high clocked single CPU is better for gaming. As for editing and rendering a 3930k set-up would be good.

there are barely any games that make use of more than 4 cores, dual cpu which usually is dual 6-8 core chip wont really make a difference tongue.gif its possible though, your better off spending that into more gpu's

Possible yes, but I'm almost certain that current Xeons are locked down even in the SR-X or Asus' equivalent board.
I mean, you can run two but they'll be at stock so you're better off with one overclocked CPU.

Bummer lol. Was toying with the idea of running dual CPU with two 680s (or 7xx if they come out next year) for total overkill. Looks like a single i7 is the way to go. Just would be so BA if you could run two i7's OC'd lol. Novel idea though frown.gif.

Edit : http://www.overclock.net/t/1267436/new-rig-open-to-comments-tips-and-suggestions
My plans for the next rig so far. Please feel free to leave comments. Still trying to figure out cooling. Think I will go air for now, still debating on water.

For 1080p? A single GTX 670/680 should be enough for 60+ FPS. You can always add a second later if you need to. thumb.gif

To play and record at 60+ fps? I am looking for overkill for my next rig. The one I am currently on has lasted 3 years and it was kind of a budget build. Looking for monster now lol.

It was kinda cool back in the days of dual socket Intel Pentiem IIIs, but its just not really viable anymore. Single quad and hexa-core chips are so good you don't need two of them.

If you want super overkill just get a Core i7-3960. biggrin.gif
